I’ve been watching a lot of solar educational videos. Yours are hands-down the most informative. Simple, relevant & common sense. Thank you!

ROI Calculation. Is there any way to get a rough estimate of the instantaneous solar power use without a consumption meter? Where to you get a whole house consumption meter?

Great question Emily. Yes, you can subtract the solar production shown on your utility bill from the total production of your solar. You can get this data from either your online solar monitoring portal, inverter, or your PV meter. This will give you a rough estimate. Not all monitoring platforms or systems are compatible with consumption meters, so I would check with your local solar installer to find out if a consumption meter can be added to your system.

Please help explain this to me. In the billing period of 5/15-6/16, my solar produced 939.4 kwh. On my Xcel utility bill, it says total delivered by Xcel: 736 kwh, total delivered by customer: 390 kwh, total net delivered by Xcel: 346 kwh. If my solar app is telling me I produced 939.4 kwh, shouldn't I have a credit for this month, instead of being charged $60+? I have a tiny 1 story home with 14 solar panels.

Hypothetically, let's say you go solar in an area that uses net metering. Is it possible for the net metering policy to be revoked and switched over to time of use metering, or is it that one is "grandfathered" into net metering if they go solar when net metering is the policy so only new clients who go solar would get stuck with time of use metering? I hope this question makes sense! Thanks for these wonderfully informative videos

Hi Ray, Thanks for watching, and for the great question. The regulatory outlook for net metering remains positive, as states are doing all they can to encourage residents to switch to renewable energy. However, as we’ve seen in a few states, like New York, they are adjusting it to ensure non-solar owners aren’t paying more to offset the costs. This shows that policies can change. History suggests you’ll likely be grandfathered into the policy if your state does change its net metering policy. However, we can not 100% guarantee that will be the case.

I'm from PA. I'm looking at a solar-producing electric bill. It does have "usage and generation" kwh on the bill it has "delivered and received". I don't know which is which. Is it the kwh I delivered to them or what they delivered to me? Or am I the one who received it or are they the receiver?

Chad, Each Utility does it a little differently. Please contact the billing department of your utility company. If you do not get an answer, you can email us a copy of your electric bill, and we can help figure it out.

My parents power bill after solar panels has been $0 for the last 6-7 months. Besides small amounts for taxes. My question is, why isn't the power company paying my parents forbthe excessive power produced by the panels? There's no way the panels are producing exactly what My parents use monthly.
