Great video. Just a couple of things that might be useful for people to know... 1) this is a rug, not a piece of carpet. They are constructed differently. A rug may be able to take the soaking that was demonstrated in the video, where as a carpet should never have the backing wet. As a professional carpet and upholstery cleaner I have seen the results of this from people using rug doctors and over wetting their carpets. This can cause the latex backing of the carpet to degrade which leads to delamination. 2) I would charge my minimum call out fee (£65 approx $80) to clean a rug this size. You wouldn’t have to spend any time doing it and it would be dry within the hour of me finishing! I also only use pet and child safe products 😉 3) it is super important that if you try and clean a rug this way that you thoroughly flush out any cleaning agents that you use. Otherwise it can lead to premature resoiling and possible damage to the fibres. It looked like you did a great job at flushing out the cleaning agents you used 😎 A great way to help Speak up drying is to raise the rug off the floor and place a fan above and below it to move air around the fibres. This will dramatically reduce dry times. Loved the video though. Keep up the good work. All the best from the UK Tom

Recommendation, buy an extra bucket and drill holes into the bottom. Place it on top of your carpet, make your mix in another bucket, then simply pour it into the one with holes and quickly pick it up and it basically is like a watering can. Makes it so much easier to disperse the solution all over without missing spots.

If the foaming is a problem, fill the bucket with water first when making up the cleaning solution. Then add the other ingredients, stirring gently to mix. Also, be VERY SURE the attachments for your shop vac are clean, or they will leave streaks on the rug. The rug will dry faster if you get it up off the ground, and drape it over something like saw horses or even the backs of furniture. Allowing the air to move under and around the rug will help it dry more evenly and quickly.

For all that effort and mess, I would recommend taking it to a professional rug cleaning place. White carpets have to be the most impractical color for anything other than out-of-the-way decoration. I have found that for darker, shorter nap carpet, a spray of stain remover and a damp mop will take out stains. Let the stain remover sit for about five minutes, spray again, and mop well. Rinse the mop and go over it again a couple of times.

I recommend a few adjustments to what you do with this. First I would wet the rug first before you put you mix on that way you don't have to do that later, second I would suggest you get a curved squeegee to push more of the water at a time and lastly I wouldn't worry much about the tarp just lay it down then put your carpet on top of it that's it. Other than that this is pretty much how I clean my rugs and will be doing once I get my business up and running here shortly. Edit:. Also you can use a leaf blower to help dry it quicker you would just need to elevate the carpet a little to do so.

Call a decent owner operated carpet cleaning outfit, like mine... lay out ALL your rugs on the driveway and they can be hot water extracted with proper cleaning solutions and techniques for like $150. Also the steam and massive, gas powered truckmount blower will leave them nearly dry before you can say, "What is my time worth?".

I know I sound lazy but that is what I was thinking. I wouldn't want to waste a sunny day (it is pouring rain right now) on cleaning a carpet when I can get a professional to do it for me. BUT he wanted to do so more power to him.

Yea true but his way saved him $150 and not that much hard work for a medium sized rug

👍 Peroxide works well to bleach out the white while in the sunlight. A condescend shop light, not led, also works well too. (Also I recommend a cheap 2gal pump sprayer)

Awesome job! I have a couple of tips.. 1. Saturate the carpet with the hose first before using the solution. 2. Use a 2 gallon watering can to spread the solution more evenly. 3. Drape carpet over 2 saw horses to speed up drying time. I hope this helps! BTW thank you for the science lesson!

Pretty much EXACTLY what the professional carpet cleaning guys say NOT to do, ie never use Vinegar, don't scrub the carpet as it damages the fibers, and don't super saturate the carpet as you'll probably damage the underlay. An ingredient THEY tend to use in their mixture is 90+ percent Rubbing Alcohol. For drying, use a wet/dry shop vac to soak up the solution without scrubbing. Also, don't use excessive dish soap as you'll end up with a foamy mess which is harder to extract. In this case, less is more. At any rate, it's your carpet so do whatever the hell you like.

You also had an extra added element in your process, as you let the carpet dry outside in the sun... UV rays have disinfectant and bleaching properties. With the OXI clean turning into Hydrogen peroxide this would have a bleaching effect...

I didn't hear you say what type of carpet you have. Will this work on 100% wool
@jerryhecka5 жыл бұрын
No. Oxiclean is an oxidizer therefore will damage wool fibers however this method would work wonders with a wool safe product.
@HandzforHire5 жыл бұрын
Hi Barron Dula - This carpet is not wool. Thanks for asking! The method I use in this video would work well for your wool carpet but Jerry is correct... do not use Oxiclean on wool. I’d start by vacuuming the carpet, and then make a solution with dish soap (or a wool detergent) and white vinegar. Saturate the whole carpet (like in this video) and then work in the solution with a soft brush. Squeegee the dirty water off the carpet, work on other spots if necessary, saturate the carpet again, squeegee again, and then vacuum with wet vac. Place fans so they blow under carpet to dry faster (if possible).
@MCSaint-go2up5 жыл бұрын
Before saturating it make sure to test the rug to see if the colors will run or bleed, the dyes will bleed or run on some wool rugs. Get a wet towel and press onto the rug for at least 15-20 seconds and if the color transfers to the towel DO NOT saturate it.

Watched 5 different videos and this is the best one! Could I line dry a rug or will it crease? Because it's already cold ❄️ in Michigan 🤦🏽♀️😭
@HandzforHire4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Line drying isn't a bad idea. Perhaps you can hang something over the line first (like a towel or blanket) so pressure of the line from the wet rug is more distributed over a larger area? Let me know how it goes! We've been having our cool mornings down here in Florida (65F) 😂 I'm sure that's not your idea of cold.

I thought you are never supposed to mix vinegar and oxy…. As it can make a dangerous gas. But then I’ve seen a couple times of people using them together. I’m so confused.
@HandzforHire Жыл бұрын
Great question, and I don't think it's dangerous, but the pH might cancel a bit. Vinegar is acidic and oxiclean is basic. You may be thinking of vinegar and bleach. You never want to mix those two because they release a toxic chlorine gas when they react together. Have a great day!
