Ranks(Junior scale, senior scale , super senior scale and apex scale)are just to state of seniority in the hierarchy thats how pay scales are defined too and posts are the designation(SP,SSP,DGP etc) one is holding . L&O is subject of respect states of the union of india so it may differ a bit but broadly they are same atleast in case of IPS categories of postings but it get change in commissionate system as they have executive magisterial power vested in them as in district policing EM is vested in DM ( District Magistrate).

आदरणीय सर, आपने कुछ और चीजों के बारे में नहीं बताया, कृपया इनके बारे में भी बताएँ। (1) जैसे मैं हरियाणा की बात करता हूँ। हरियाणा पुलिस में इंस्पेक्टर रेंक तक कन्धे में डाली जाने वाली डोरी खाकी रंग की होती है, जबकि इससे ऊपर अर्थात DSP. रेंक से यह Dark Blue रंग की शुरू हो जाती है। (2) दोनों कॉलर पर भी Dark Blue रंग की पट्टियां लगी होती हैं, जो शायद IG रैंक से शुरू होती हैं। (3) किसी विशेष परिस्थितियों में SP रैंक अधिकारी के गले में भी लाल धारी वाला नीले रंग का एक कपड़ा बंधा होता है। (4) इंस्पेक्टर रैंक तक कंधे के साथ साथ टोपी पर भी सिर्फ हरियाणा पुलिस (HP) DSP. रैंक हरियाणा पुलिस सर्विस (HPS) और उसके बाद IPS (4) गोल टोपी के रंग में भी अंतर आ जाता है जैसे कि Head Constable तक गोल टोपी खाकी रंग की और उसके बाद ASI से लेकर सभी रैंक में गोल टोपी गहरे नीले रंग की हो जाती है। (5) Shoes और बैल्ट भी Head Constable तक काले रंग के लेकिन ASI रैंक से आगे सभी रैंक तक हल्के लाल रंग के देखने को मिलते हैं। सर अब कुछ सवाल:- (1) आपने जैसा कि महाराष्ट्र के बारे में बताया कि महाराष्ट्र में इंस्पेक्टर रैंक तक मुंबई पुलिस लिखते हैं और एक DSP या ACP के कंधे पर मुंबई पुलिस सर्विस (म.पो.से) लेकिन देखा जाये तो इंस्पेक्टर रैंक तक महाराष्ट्र पुलिस और DSP /ACP रैंक में महाराष्ट्र पुलिस सर्विस लिखा जाना चाहिए। ऐसा क्यों ? (2) शायद बिहार में Head Constable रैंक तक गोल टोपी भी खाकी रंग की अपेक्षा गहरे लाल रंग की पहनी होती है और कई राज्यों में DSP रैंक के अधिकारी से नीचे वाले ASI से Inspector भी कंधे में खाकी रंग की बजाय Dark Blue रंग वाली डोरी पहने होते हैं। जबकि होनी खाकी रंग वाली चाहिए। मतलब सभी राज्यों में Insignia & Dress Code एक जैसा क्यों नहीं है ? महत्वपूर्ण सवाल : कई जिलों में तो पुलिस अधीक्षक (SP) भी एक IPS अधिकारी की जगह सीनियर DSP रैंक के अधिकारी को लगा दिया जाता है और उनके नीचे अतिरिक्त पुलिस अधीक्षक (ASP) एक नवनियुक्त IPS अधिकारी। स्थिति विचित्र तो हो जाती होगी ??
