Works perfectly. Thanks for the walkthrough, all other solutions I tried didn't work. Biggest benefit was System Preferences -> Sound -> Output. Another tip is to make sure the QuickTime player volume for recording is set to no volume at all (if doing audio recording), otherwise this will create an echo in the playback.

@@salman.dprince that is true. However app and website developers can make restrictions about what can be recorded on iPhone/iPad. Try recording the screen on Netflix or Snapchat, for example. These restrictions are too easy to circumvent on laptops.

This tutorial is a game-changer for me. I've been hunting for it for ages, and stumbling upon it feels like finding a life saver. Tip: If you have big sur or higher. Go to the control center, then click on the sound slider. Once you do that you will see your speaker outputs or whatever. Now select "MacBook Air/Pro speakers. Now you can adjust the volume like before. Once you're ready to record. Again, click on the volume slider and click BH+Speakers or whatever you named it.

Like literally this guy took just 2 mins to explain this. Imma cryyy... 😭 Note - Once your video is recorded, then you need to switch back the audio output back to original mode...so that you can hear what you just recorded. Bonus Tips - 1. Use a Chrome browser for lesser hiccups, not Safari. 2. Restart you computer if you face a dead-end any time.

I image it's trying to record a stereo track, instead of mono. In music software, a mic should always be in mono, but I can't seem to change this in the Audio Midi set up. Can you help? Thank you. I love it except for 1 thing; when I use Screenflow to record my desktop audio, it has massive amount of reverb, making the audio unusable for any kind of production. Any tips on how to remove reverb when capturing desktop audio with Screenflow?

I am recording interview questions on either Voice Recorder or Garage Band and using a web source for the responses, and I am unable to hear myself on playback. I have tried recording with both my headset and iPhone 12 on a Mac Studio M1 Max running Ventura 13.3. Any suggestions?

Everything went great so far, except whenever I load in the multi-output device before recording it always makes this high pitch static noise before resuming resuming its intended function. Anyway to fix that?

A really helpful video for anyone with a Silicon Mac running OS11. Mini Macs do not have sound controls for external speakers (I guess the same would apply to MacBooks) so for anyone who, like me, uses 'SoundSource' to control volume from the desktop 'Add Favorit' application & when recording Redirect that application to Black Hole/BH+Speaker before going into QuickTime & it works perfectly. Something I found useful was in 'SoundSource' to set BH+Speaker to 'Mac mini speakers' just good enough to know what is going on but as the sound quality on these speakers is very poor for anything beyond system bleeps it is easy to remember to switch back to normal external audio output. I also have CleanShot for image capture if there is any way that this could capture audio like QuickTime it would be great to know.

Hi Gary, I made the "BH+Speakers", and it shows up perfectly on the "Sound" listing from the top bar, but when I click shift+command+5, it fails to show up on the "Options" listing. So how can I fix this? I'm trying to record the screen with system sound. thanks! (I can record system sound with the Blackhole 2 btw)

Great Thanks, I'm now able to record my zoom sessions (if you are on zoom you can add BH+Speakers and your regular audio output) this way you can record the speakers and while you're speaking as well.

Very nice video! One thing i found out is if you follow all the steps and you still can't hear it, make sure to go to system preferences, and then go to Security and Privacy, and then click on Privacy, and go to Microphone, and check if Quicktime Player is able to access to your microphone

I'm trying to make it work with an external headset. Because I need to speak with other people but they should not hear themselves. I don't see the Quicktime player there! I also can't add anything. I'm on Big Sur with Apple M1 if that has anything to do with it.. EDIT: I don't know why, but after removing and adding the mixed output device and aggregated device one more time Removing mixed output device, removing aggregated device, adding both new. For output, check BH and external headphones, for input, check BH and external microphone. When you're done with recording and plug out your headset, it should switch back to the normal sound devices (in my case Macbook speakers and Macbook microphone) automatically. So next time you want to record, you have to right click on both and choose 'use this device for output / input' on both.

Wow. I wanted to believe this would be more simple in 202-freakin-1... but... "le sigh"... apparently THIS is how you record screen with system audio on a Mac! Thanks for this tutorial! I ended up using this solution (downloaded the 2 ch version of BlackHole)... and made a dual output configuration for going to BlackHole and AirPods Pro at the same time. Only tricky thing to be aware of is that whenever you put AirPods into your ears.... EVEN IF YOU DISABLED THE AUTOMATIC CONNECTING THING IN BLUETOOTH SETTINGS.... it will still switch the system output to only AirPods Pro. 🤦‍♂️ So whenever you put them into your ears... remember to go up to the System bar at top of screen and say "no no... BAD Mac!"... and change Sound output back to your custom configuration to include both BlackHole and AirPods Pro. As long as you leave the AirPods in your ears... it seems that you are good. 🤦‍♂️ (Here's another facepalm.) Talk about complicated to achieve a simple result.... /rant

@@spicereynolds Hmmm I did not try using OBS. Maybe that works? I'm using a MacBook Pro and last time I tried using OBS for Mac it sent the laptop fans going full blast which was too distracting. Apparently OBS is written a lot more effectively for Windows... so if you've got a Windows machine or even a desktop Mac... probably OBS could work? 🤔
