For the black boarder, I always like to use the crop/pad tool in filters to trim those parts out, and use the scaling/aspect ratio to add the full resolution of the footage.

There are other brands of capture cards, some that are probably cheaper, but Elgato is the most reliable and that's what I've always used.

i have a regular hd60 and i did excatly what you and 5 other videos told me and it still doesn't work, i have am external mini usb cable plugged into my pc and the hd60, two hdmi cables, wii to hdmi and a monitor. it obviously works because i can still play my wii through my monitor with the elgato in between, but for video capture device, it never shows up. can you perhaps tell me if i missed anything. the only thing i can think of is it is because i have an external cord but that shouldn't matter

I have the Original game capture hd capture card, it doesn't even work in that, which does suck. color's look bad, but I just use my HD PVR 2 from Hauppauge that I picked up for around $60, but it at least works
