Thank you for this info. I was upgrading my software on an iMac b/c it was running slow (kernal_task). I believe I installed the OS on the Data HD portion so I can't see my original user files - pretty much as you've outlined. Can I try reinstalling the OS the same way I did and put it on the other drive? Would that solve the issue? Thank you!

this isn't what it looks like on my moms mac. her documents are "gone" and when I follow the steps there is no part that says "previous content". So I'm stuck at this step. What next? do we have to have some sort of external drive to put things onto? can't we recover the content to the mac?

Flip the mac over, unscrew the screws on the bottom, removing the back cover to get access to the computer's hard drive. Remove the hard drive, use an adapter cable to connect the hard drive to another working computer. Navigate to the hard drive in question and find (you may need to use a file recovery softer if the files are not already visible) and when found, copy the files to the working computer. Once files are copied, move them back to the target computer.

It's crazy that Apple develop so much features but they just CAN NOT stop screwing everything when new MacOs version arrives...Why the hell should we do all that staff ? I just lost ALL my fotos, and I don't have a "previous" folder...

Because they suck big time right? I've never experienced this on my windows, Never! this BS from Apple, all my large files have disappeared, have you figured out how to fix it?
