When you click on the hard drive.. are there any folders in it?? Are you using a windows system to recover the files? For reference my mother spilled water on my laptop and i was not notified until about a week ago because of finals, which i fear may have killed the hard drive altogether; I got to the last step at 12:25 but my hard drive keeps popping in and out of the computer (my laptop will detect for 5 seconds and then randomly say E:/ drive not found and I end up not being able to copy any of the files on Users. Additionally, when i try to access the files on the hard drive to check on Users, it says "you do not have permission to access these files ...", I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'm taking it to a repair shop to see if they can do something but I've had this hard drive/old laptop for 7 yrs and all of the files there are extremely significant. Any help if u can provide would be greatly appreciated.

If it is due to the water... I 'm not sure what to do about that?? I know loose bearing can cause an issues like this.. and if you put the drive in the freezer for a while.. that will shrink the bearings, and allow you to read for a little while... maybe a frost free freezer might suck the water out?? but water can cause whiskers to grow internally shoring out things?? it could be that the write head is going bad?? If this is the case.. the more you try to read, the worse things will get.. you should try to recover things as time efficient as possible.. if you are able to read.. and don't leave the hard drive hooked up when not actively trying to read.. this will cause it to wear out sooner.. if it is a head issue.. maybe you could try photorec, if nothing else is working?? I have a HP laptop with a hard drive 1 (301) failure. I ignored it stupidly and now my laptop won’t boot up. Does this sound like the type of issue you’re referring to in this video that I may potentially be able to retrieve data? Through the little research I have done there aren’t many other sources suggesting this action so I’m skeptical to try it.
@jaynesnetwork6 жыл бұрын
I guess this is something on the newer hard drives that is supposed to warn you as soon as the hard drive starts to fail, to give you time to recover your data. You should not try booting the system any more.. this may further damage the drive.. You either should remove it immediately and try to recover data ASAP, like I show in this video.. or if you don't feel comfortable doing that.. take it to a local professional that is capable of recovering your data.. Yes this process can retrieve you data, assuming the hard disc is functioning properly still. When the hard drive starts to fail.. the more you use it, the more it can degrade, so time on and running, is an issue.. basically you should retrieve your data ASAP with as little drive on-time as possible.. if it is not too late.. Best of luck..

I got a marvelously simple adapter for less than ten bucks on e-bay. It uses two USB ports for both power and data. The problem is that while the hard drive out of my totally crashed Toshiba laptop is still just fine and opens ok, Toshiba seems to have some kind of proprietary file system that buries the document and data libraries in some sort of program data files so I can't find them. I've tried to down load a couple of "free" data mining programs, but you still have to pay for a lot of the data after they find it for you. My question is this: In the past, working with desktops, I have just replaced the desktop hard drive with the one I want to recover data from. If the OS is intact the box just boots up on the new drive. However, I know that laptops often contain a lot pf proprietary programming. I have a HP laptop on order and I was wondering if it would hurt to just swap out the HP hard drive for the Toshiba without harming the HP?
@jaynesnetwork7 жыл бұрын
I have transplanted hard drives to a different laptop computer before, when the computer itself had a hard ward failure... It will work if the computer is almost identical.. It seems that windows loads drivers for a specific laptop, and if those are not exactly the hardware of the new computer, those devices will not work right... also the way windows is, they don't give an install disc, and I'm not sure how to get the proprietary drivers.. but.. I did find a trick though... for instance I swapped the HD from a fail HP laptop, with an almost identical part number HP, and the wifi drivers were not right for the new machine... so I took the wifi out of the old computer and put it in the new one and then it work fine then.. best of luck with that project..

It is still a small possibility that you can recover files.. Installing another OS is really bad.. You probably overwrote much of your data when you did that.. continuing to run is OS is also bad.. the OS continues to write to the disc, overwriting more data.. There is a slim change you can recover some data, if you are serious about doing this... shut down the computer immediately! remove the hard drive.. and try to read it from another computer using a data recovery program like 'Photorec'. I have a tutorial on how to do this, if you are interested.. Tell me an I will find and post the link here... I will tell you that there is a chance you will recover something, but it will be a lot of work, an you will have to sort through lots and lots of junk that was deleted, and that you will have no use for.. (like temp files from internet browsers from every web page you ever visited).. Are you looking for photos and videos.. or exe files or text files or what kind of files?? It will help to know exactly what you hope to recover...

Is the hard drive questionable? If you have one that you know is good, I would test that with the cables to verify your cables are working properly, and that you are getting power to the hard drive and everything. If you verify that the connection is OK, then It is possible that the hard drive has a mechanical failure. There are many different ways the HD can mechanically fail, most can not be fixed. A common way is that the bearings are too loose now. if this happens to be the case, sometimes if you stick the HD in the freezer for a while, the coldness will shrink the bearings enough that they will work for a short period of time. before you try this, make sure you can connect with a known good hard drive with your external cables. It could could also be a software/driver issue with your computer? Although, I didn't have any issues with mine, BTW what OS are you running?

I got this at Microcenter, but you can probably find it on line as well. There are many different type. Mine was able to connect to the older type hard drives as well as the sata. With what every you get, you will want to make sure the plugs are compatible with the hard drive you have before you buy it. Hopefully this helps a little..

So is the Molex connecter just plugged into the power supply that you have plugged into 100 via a usb port or is that power cable all one piece that feeds the Molext 4 female connecter ? I have a Seagate Barracuda ATA IV 80 gig HD that the motherboard crashed on an older G$ tower I had. I need to power the HD and the plug/cable you show at 1:30 ish in your vid is what I am after. I know the Molex connecter appears to plug into a 110 power supply and so I need to find something like that but can't figure out what to call it to pull up options online, Is it simply called a 110 power supply cord ?? Kinda new to all this but there are a couple thousand pics on the HD of my kids i am desperate to retrieve if possible. Thanks for your hep thus far !!!
@jaynesnetwork7 жыл бұрын
I believe the power cable is a separate cable that has a little power supply that plugs into the wall, and the other cable goes to USB on my computer. I know there was a little power switch somewhere on the cable to turn the power on, on mine, and it wasn't completely obvious at first. You definitely need power to the disc or it will not work. Yes you should definitely try to recover any data you can. I know that stuff is irreplaceable, and a lot of the 'big box' computer-help places just want to reformat, to get your computer working, of course that will loose all your data. When it is working, it should have some notification that says there is a new device connected I believe. Did you purchase a kit like what I was using? It is possible to plug it into the power supply of another computer as well. I would recommend shutting off the computer nicely before and after disconnecting if you try this. You don't want to do something to mess up more things. Try not to hot plug devices if you can help it. Hope this helps a little..

Try putting the hard drive in the freezer.. and leave it there for several hours.. then try quickly reading the data while it is cold! sometimes this works.. because many hard drive fail when their bearing become loose from wear and tear... the coldness will temporarily shrink these bearings, and allow you to read data from the drive.. for a little while, until the drive warms up again! it is worth a shot..

what model of HP is that? can the software used to recover any data be used to diagnose whether or not the installed OS is still suitable to be copied to a new SSD /HDD? thanks for a great tutorial

So what probably happened was the computer hardware failed. The drive was fine all along. If this drive were plugged into a the same model laptop like the one it was pulled from the laptop would probably boot up. Good video for people that have a laptop crap out.

How can I find any emails from a removed hard drive? I've looked and looked and cannot find any but have been told they are there somewhere. Did you try reading the hard drive with another working computer?? Does the hard drive spin up?? (assuming it is a mechanical/magnetic hard drive).. It is possible for the hard drive to fail physically.. and for that there is no cure that I know of.. Usually, the boot/OS gets corrupted.. then it is possible to read the drive from another working computer.. if it is a more serious problem.. it may not be possible to retrieve the data.. Is the hard drive still functional, when plugged into another computer??

Will this work if the hard disk has a HDD password?? I don’t want to buy the sata USB adaptor if I don’t have to
@jaynesnetwork4 жыл бұрын
It depends?? Is it a login password?? or is it encrypted data??? If it is just a login PW,.. the data is not affected.. it is only a windows formality.. It is possible that another windows machine may respect that password?? I usually use a Linux Machine.. they will just blow through that, no problem.. Linux does not care about windows passwords! But if the data is actually encrypted with a bit locker, and a PW, then it is actually scrambled on the hard drive.. and you will need to PW for that, to unscramble the data! Best of Luck!!
@user-tj7hk1ss8d5 жыл бұрын
if HDD or SSD cannot be opened because of encrypted drive and notepad file explorer won't access it, try using a software to remove bitlocker, if you have data on a system drive, recovery environment will suspend the encryption and you can access the drive using notepad

Can a hard drive that may have gotten wet be recovered? Laptop got wet not sure if hard drive did. Took off cover and took out hard drive the hard drive itself seemed dry.
@jaynesnetwork6 жыл бұрын
Maybe Better let things dry out very good before putting electricity on anything. If anything is wet, it can do even more damage and burn out circuits, by shoring them out. I would let it dry for a week at least before attempting to put power on it. If the hard drive itself is dry, them maybe you can attempt to recover in another computer? It should probably work,... provided the initial wet computer did not short out the hard drive circuits in the hard drive itself. Definitely try it on a good working computer... Best of luck. Let us know how it works out.. Thanks..

My laptop doesn't recognize the external hard drive that I connected it to. Any advice on how to get it recognized? I can hear the hard drive ticking/clicking when the power is connected.
@jaynesnetwork5 жыл бұрын
Can you hear the drive spinning up?? If not, that is a very bad sign.. and probably is impossible for anyone to retrieve the data.. The drives can fail mechanically, and then this trick does not work.. This fix only works if only the OS is damaged, so that the computer can not boot off this drive, yet the drive is still physically working and can be used as a secondary drive in another computer.. if the drive is not physically functional, then I know of no reasonable way of retrieving data from it. If the drive is not recognized by the computer, and you only hear clicking sounds.. and no spinning.. My guess is that it is probably toast.. Sorry..
@WKaznartist5 жыл бұрын
@@jaynesnetwork I will have to retry and listen more closely to hear if it spins at all. And I have a 2nd laptop that I can test to see if the hard drive is recognizable. Would any recovery software work?
@jaynesnetwork5 жыл бұрын
If the drive is working.. I believe you should be able to access it normally.. Some hard drives fail because the bearing become loose. If you put the drive in the freezer for a while, sometimes it will shrink the bearing enough.. so they will work for a little while, and you can recover your data.. Other things can fail of course... and if that is the case, this fix won't work.. For instance, a tecky here at work, had the circuitry on one of his hard drives fail, and he was able to replace this circuit, and get it to work again.. I would probably not attempt this.. Anyway, yes, try it on another computer, it can't hurt.. best of luck!..

Unless you encrypted the hard drive.. you should be able to access it.. There may be issues with it on another windows machine.. If so, try a Linux machine.. @jaynesnetwork7 жыл бұрын
I believe that the D partition probably will not be harmed, but to be sure I would backup it completely before trying something like this, then if it does get erased you have it saved. If you have a copy of Ubuntu on a boot disc, you can boot your computer into linux and not have to worry about affecting the hard drive as well... It is another possibility to help you trouble shoot. I still would backup first though.. There is always a risk when you are doing something like this... Maybe you could just put a new hard drive in your computer, and start from scratch, and save the old one to get files off? Just another possibility..

Hi You may have saved me from a great loss but I am not sure. My problem is this: I had a 32 bit desktop computer whose power pack blew out. I had to buy a new computer in hurry and was forced to allow someone else to do that for me because of the circumstances I was in. They bought a 64bit HP computer for £500. (£200 too much in my opinion) I was horrified to find that when I got to see this computer the M/Board only had one SATA plug on it. I had hoped I could hook up the drive from the old computer, copy the files across I need and all would be well. Do you think adapters like yours would help? Or, do you know of any adapters that would solve any incompatibility issues between 32 bit and 64 bit drives? I am in the UK and finding help here for this is proving difficult but I would happily have something shipped if I had to.
@jaynesnetwork7 жыл бұрын
My adapter converts both SATA and IDE for use on USB. If you get an adapter that is compatible with your drive it should work. The number of bits is more of a processor thing.. It shouldn't affect the kind of hard drive format you have.. A hard drive from a 32bit computer is basically the same as one from 64 bit, so it should work.. best of luck.

Hi...what if u have more partitions on ur hard drive..how to open other partitions on the other laptop?
@jaynesnetwork6 жыл бұрын
I believe they should be mounted as usual. Normally a different letter is assigned to each partition. When you access the drive this way, the computer sees it as a normal external hard drive, so unless the partition tables are corrupted or something, I believe it should be a very straight forward process of copying the data from the crashed disc to the new computer's hard drive.. If there are lost files or major corruption of the HD, it is possible to recover them too.. Even if they have been deleted. I have a video on this, but that is a much more complex process. Best to try the easy stuff first though..
