Thanks Simon. It took a bit of research how to perform a comparable action to median filter in GIMP, but using a despecle filter gave similar results and helped me get my image of the North America Nebula looking how I wanted.

The downloads works on PS CS6, I'd expect it to work on other versions, however if you have problems you can recreate the action by following the steps in the video.
