I've been sanding mine every other year as well. Recently I've discovered it's much easier to use a power washer to get rid of old coat. Give that a try.

So you skip sanding completely and just power wash then oil? Do you think it's necessary to use a brightener?

What went wrong? Went from 60 straight to 220 grit, didn't apply or remove the product correctly, and that wood still looked ultra dusty when the finish was applied.

160 max for penetrating oil?

Was a great general video for people who already know a little. But, it should have mentioned you shouldn’t go from a 60-80 grit straight to a 220 finishing grit. There should at least be 2 other stages of grit. Also, depending on the finish already on there, you may need to first chemically strip it. A true pain, I know, but necessary if you’re looking to do it right. After that, sandings with an 80g, 120, 180, then a 220. Be sure to thoroughly wipe down with shop vac if there are lots of groves, followed by a tack cloth. You have to eliminate ANY dust before applying anything. Remember with any wood finishing, the prep is the crucial part to having a good outcome. Letting coats dry overnight is preferable if you’ve got the time. And stay in the same family. If you start with water-based, stay with water based, same with oil-based. Technically you can sometimes apply oil based over water, but never vice versa. You’ll risk fish eye, and eventual flaking. Apply 2-4 coats of spar urethane, using super fine 0000 steel wool in between coats to knock back tiny bumps and get that super smooth surface!

One last thing - brush quality totally matters. For oil based, use a high quality Chinese bristle brush. Never use a multipurpose brush if the piece matters.

I apply 5 or 6 coats, especially for outdoor applications. It takes time,, but lasts and looks great. The instructions direct you to reapply it annually. It's biodegradable.

After the first coat assuming it’s a heavy coat, back sand it, get that top flat again, then apply another coat.. then sand that with an even finer grit. When I do outdoor teak furniture. I coat and backsand until you’re essentially applying the finish over an existing finish and the top has stopped drinking the finish. Why? Because then the top is sealed. When you do the annual or no annual cleaning, you’re not starting over. You’re just gently removing a layer of finish then, reapply another coat or two.

How many coats? I generally put 3-4 coats on and then finish sanding with 600-1000 to get a smooth finish. Sure if takes off some of the Teak, but if you got enough coats it's a nice duller finish.
@eltomas3634

After that last coat is fully cured, you can put on a layer of automotive carnuba wax, preferably one with some UV protection in it, that helps a lot to shed water, dirt, and protect the oil finish. I use the spray on wax, makes the job quick and easy.

I've read that oil isn't suitable for outdoor wood. I think because it doesn't protect against UV. I was told (yesterday) that a sealer is best for any teak outdoors. I'm eager to see how yours holds up with oil.
@eltomas3634
@eltomas3634 2 жыл бұрын
Right on. UV rays are just brutal on any finish, but especially clear coats and with substrate that expands and contracts with moisture changes, like wood does.

The company that sold me my teak table (which looks identical to the one in this video) says do *not* use teak oil! They recommend water-based finishes. And yes, if you do not want a gray teak table, it is annual maintenance.

Refresh every year at least with a thin coat to seal the microscopic breakdown before you can see it. I met a sailor lovingly wiping his 50 year old boat for the 100th time and it looked like new..

Starbrite is the 'walmart' solution. From my research, people that know all go to Semco and Cetton (sp?). Would love to hear more about the semco. Just dropped almost $600 for three gallons. Stuff is more dear than high-end scotch!

I recently purchased teak as decking material for my exterior porch. after a lot of reading the general consensus is that overtime these teak oils break down the teak itself as they are not oils extracted from the teak wood itself and way more often than not require an application YEARLY. On the other hand, teak sealer also is not a natural extract or oil from teak wood itself though the general consensus is that sealing is your best option as you are preserving and protecting the natural oils that teak has, thus requiring less maintenance than if you were to oil it.

When I've researched this product for a door I'll be doing in the future, the oil is supposed to be put on very liberally. If it soaks in you're supposed to add more. I believe you're supposed to allow to soak 10 minutes or so and remove with a rag. Then I've heard references to 3-4 coats??

Any suggestions for sanding off a polyurethane coating on teak dining table? (It’s some sort of finish that is flaking off, not a wood penetrating finish). Start and finish with what grit paper? Appreciate any suggestions!
@MrGizmo211
@MrGizmo211 Жыл бұрын
I would start with 80 grit to knock off the flaking. Then use 120 grit to get a smooth finish. I might even use a 220 grit as a finish. Generally 120 grit would be enough.
@johnnyonly163
@johnnyonly163 Жыл бұрын
If it's on the surface like that, best to use a mild stripper first or that stuff can gunk up your paper/sander. General stripper is not used for teak since the oil soaks in, but it sounds like you have some sort of urethane on there, so stripper is the way to start. Clean with spirits. Let dry, then sand and finish.
