looks good usually i run an individual flashing 3”x6” per shingle running all the way up that ensures any water slides right down without having a chance to get back underneath the shingle and flashing and being called out again

Interesting to see how you manage with straight flashing. You still end up with upper corners that depend on sealant and the membrane below for protection in torrential rains. A formed upper flashing would be better, when one that fits is available.

He put an ice-dam under the flashing that drains onto the top of shingles below the window. It's less labor intensive than the step-flashing approach, more costly, because the ice-dam is really expensive but the method is just as effective. I would not have run the ice dam on top of the curb for energy efficiency, but it'll work for keeping the roof dry and the window sealed.

Great vid, question if I may. Can silicone perish and let in water? I believe silicone was used in between the curb and the skylight cap when it was seated. After repointing the coping stones and applying a water proof sealant underneath them and still having water ingress it dawned on me that water may be getting in over the curb and under the skylight cap through the silicone and into the roof space. Would like your opinion. Thanks

My home was built in 1988 and I don't believe this skylight(have 2 of them) had been replaced so it is an original imo. Should I replace the skylight as well? Please advise.

Agreed. That was my point as referenced above. Why no step vs. a long section. I it won't leak at the skylight, but the lack of step isn't directing the water back on top of the lower shingles which isn't preferred in my opinion.

@@qualityleafguardsguards7978 so wait you're tying to say that when you're shingling against a wall that's 30ft long, it's better to use one long piece of L flashing rather than step flashing? Get out of here. Step flashing is the best way to water tight a side wall and skylight. Water flows downwards yes, but it also has the chance to flow sideways a few inches every half foot or so. That's literally why there's a 6+ inch book, no nails within 4 inches of a seam. Felt or synthetic is to be put on horizontalally at the eaves then continues upwards with a 3" overlap. Etc etc. Don't go commenting on something G that you don't have a clue on how it works.

A one pc flashing for the side walls works great but really needs an open hem on the outer edges and in a lot of cases is the only thing used on high end metal shingles from the manufacture..
@Josh-ww5kz3 жыл бұрын
Not true. You do realize how much better a piece of step flashing is per shingle right? For one. If water runs along that wall flashing and diverts out, bam right then and there it's under the shingles and hitting the underlayment. With step, it overlaps the shingle beneath it in a way that makes it so water has a low chance of actually doing that. And to make it worse. Its highly likely that he trimmed the corners of the shingle going against the curb. Water will catch that corner and run along it going underneath the shingle and hitting the nails. Won't leak soon but after a few days or weeks it will rust the nail out, then damage the sheething and cause leaks inside the house. Not to mention the mould that will start to grow because of the water. But I mean you're clearly a gutter guard installer so I wouldn't think that you'd know how water and shingle roofing works.

I Would never reuse they breake when taking them off
@Josh-ww5kz3 жыл бұрын
If you're careful enough, and the shingles are still in great condition, you could reuse them, to avoid having mismatched shingles especially on 2+year old roofs. Im sure you've noticed roofs that have different coloured shingles in some areas, but that's due to a leak or blowoffs. You just have to make sure you seal the nail holes on the shingle with roofing tar after you install them. Then put a few blobs of the same stuff to reseal the shingle down

This type of skylight can leak over time, but if the roof has the proper pitch its pretty rare, typically what happens is these types of roofers do incorrect installs and thats what causes most issues.
@Josh-ww5kz3 жыл бұрын
The actual skylight can leak, usually due to a defect in the skylight, rubber gaskets aren't installed correctly. But whenever a roofer inspects a roof for a leak call, you can usually notice if it's a skylight defect

So here's what it's like to watch this as a regular person who's handy but is looking for a tutorial: "We're going to replace the curb" ---video cut--- ""now that we have the curb installed we're going to put down the water and ice shield" ---video cut--- "here we have the water ice shield installed and we've cut the flashing to overlap" :/ Yes, I see that you've done it, but HOW!? Have someone film you ACTUALLY INSTALLING the curb and water/I've shield. Without that this is not helpful in showing people how to "reflash a skylight like a pro."
