My interim solution is using RCS thruster blocks as permanent engines and disposable engine pods to move space stations. RCS engines are currently the only engines that can use fuel tanks that aren't in direct contact with them, so this allows me to just switch replace fuel tanks and/or larger fuel-engine pods when I need to.

I think that now when the fuel transfer is possible you can just refuel the part you used earlier in case it has some special equipment and then you don't need to add that many features to your tanks as they become more useful for various kinds of spacecrafts.

Make refilling station around every planet you can get to. So you can go there and go back to earth. Second one is to always add docks to your ships so you can rescue it or refill tanks. Thats all I know, but there are more!

They're in the paid version. Most of the best stuff is. I did find, though, that you can create a miniature Saturn V rocket in the free version, and get it to the moon! (Well, actually I got it to Mars, but...;) )

Have space stations in orbit over other planets for when you go exploring, that’s what I do, on my way back to Earth I just dock onto my space station and refuel so I don’t have to worry about not having enough fuel to enter Earth

It won’t be effective. You will need to get the BFR into orbit and dock it with another BFR for refueling, the BFR that just refuelled the ship will have to land then your crew ship can go to mars. This is all stopped because you can’t transfer fuel via docking ports yet.

How do you swap control between individual vessels that are that close? The way I know to swap control is on the 'map', and if I zoom in that far to try to see two vessels in close proximity it's just a fast moving impossible to focus on jumble that I have to frantically scroll to try and keep up with.
