I have found a great trick on cleaning all types of grips and club heads. I use hand cleaner...Gojo or anything that has Pumice. Place a good amount in your hand or on a clean rag and scrub the grip back and forth and spin the club in your hand for a few minutes. Then run it under warm water and remove any residue using a scrub brush. Dry with a clean cloth or paper towel and BAM! Like new. Works REALLY well on old leather grips. You will be amazed at the crud it removes. I also clean the groves and club heads with this stuff and it works great! Put a little bit on the head/groves and use a scrub brush to clean them up. Rinse with warm water. Try it and see for yourself. BTW...I enjoy your videos.

Those old Apex shafts are pretty cool. Lighter, easier to flight, consistent. I heard Hogan had a policy that if you ever put his shafts in a non-Hogan head, that person would never sell Hogan clubs again. Also that Hogan even wrote a nasty letter to Langer after he won the Master's with Apex shafts in Wilson heads. Good stuff.

@@bryanmccoy203 It was 93. You can Google around for more information. Way back I did see a copy of the letter sent to Hogan dealers. The letter to Langer was never replied to or acknowledged by Langer that I know of. He took the high road.

My late father took his cherished Macgregor Jimmy Demaret blade/persimmons and "worked" on them. The persimmons are a mess. The face is not flat, the insert is protruding past the actual wood, and the grooves on the inserts are rounded. The irons look wonderful, despite old oversized grips. Took the irons out; those blades are small, but the ball still goes straight. Grooves on the short irons??? Not sure they do anything. Love those old clubs and your video on restoration.

on old Hogan clubs "5" shafts are the stiffest. most people ordered them with "4" shafts so if you see them for sale on ebay most old Apex clubs will have #4 shafts in them. #4 is stiff. #5 is extra-stiff.

I too have an old set of clubs of this era (late 70's- early 80's), Nicolaus Murfields 3-PW, D, 3w, 5w and they are in really good shape. They belonged to my grandfather and were given to me after he passed. I'd had them sitting in a corner for years, and finally pulled them out to look at them and research them recently. On 4 or 5 of the irons, the hosel has separated from the head about 1/2". What's the best way to reseat it? I'd sent an email via the website, but thought a few others might be interested in your comments here? Thanks Jim!

I almost dropped out of my seat when I saw you pull out that club as I have been admiring my acquisition of same set, 1973 APEX 2-SW in similar condition! Mine all have the brown gold grips, matching serials on the ferrules...which brings me to this question. I have old musical instruments with serials that can be traced by factory records made public. Do any such records exist or is there a code to reading the numbers? Great channel btw. Keep up the good work.

@mike, the Apex era clubs are as follows. A set of true 1973 Apex would have something like B35233. The first digit is for the month. B=February. The second is the year. In this case 3=1973. The next two are the first two digits of the model number for the club. In this case 52=5200 which was the Apex iron set for model year 1973. The next digit is the shaft flex. 3=regular. The last digit is swing weight. 3=D3. The clubs in this video are 1974-1978 based on the grips, ferrule trim rings and the shaft band graphics. Hogan introduced model years, not calendar years. The 1973 Apex clubs were available for order in September 1972. They were replaced early in mid 1973 by the 1974 model which is confusion for people because they see the "3" in the year slot but they often are 1974 models made in 1973.

Love the video Jim. Can watch this stuff all day. I think I watched a video about Kevin Na’s caddy saying best way to clean irons is with a damp towel and the dry them. I commented that I’ve always used a soft toothbrush, with a little soapy water. I clean my irons after every round and they look like new. Some people said don’t use a brush but I’ve never scratched my irons. Can you recommend a proper way to clean clubs? Thank you
@McGolf
@McGolf 4 жыл бұрын
on irons you can use the tooth brush. Keep in mind where the pro plays and where we play. Typically not the same conditions. however the towel method works excellent on woods and hybrids and irons too, The tour towel we sell with the McGOlf logo is the towel the caddies use. Wet one side and use it to remove debris and the other to dry. Viola done

I just bought some used Honma TR20Ps and I can see some rust on the inside of the pocket cavity of the 6i and 7i, I can't really see inside the other ones. Is there something I could spray in there that would prevent the rust from getting worse?

@@McGolf unfortunately the slot into the pocket is very narrow on the TR20Ps, 2mm on the 6iron and less than 1mm on the 10 iron. So I can’t get any tools in there. I’m thinking I will spray some anti rust stuff in there then rinse them out, and then spray some rust inhibitor in there pockets and hope for the best.

A few ways of getting the shaft out with the shaft/ ball bearing intact. Either freeze the head, then add a little heat and some wd-40 or hit the hosel with some oxy-gas really concentrate the heat but do it quickly. You don’t want the heat going into the shaft if you can help it. But you will have to retumble the head if you do it that way. I’ve done probably around 500 of those.

Ben Hogan started pinning his clubs because back in the day the epoxies they had were not as good as epoxies we use today. more importantly Ben Hogan was an extremely meticulous man. he left nothing to chance and he knew that if a pro was using one of his clubs in competition and for some reason the epoxy was bad it would be bad for business if word got around that Hogan heads on clubs would come popping off without warning. not a good look. also, it was the custom in the early 1950's for manufacturers to pin their heads. Hogan sold his company in 1960 but stayed on for many years running the operation. they were still pinning heads on into the early 1990's. I am not even sure if they ever stopped pinning heads. the company changed hands a few times between the late 1990's and today.
