This reminds me of a tour my dad and I went on years ago. The guide asked our names one by one, and after hearing them, she reached out to shake our hands, gripped it while starting right into our eyes, and repeated our names back firmly. She explained this was how she remembers names. And she did! Throughout the entire tour she remembered everyone's names perfectly :)

I think theres also an element of self-consciousness at work. I think people and definitely me are generally mentally occupied around new people with the task of not looking awkward or bored, or thinking what the next thing you are going to say in comversation is, while still listening. So the things people say kind of slip off the surface because you are putting way more mental energy into what you are putting out, rather than what you are taking in.

Techniques: 1) quizzing yourself. Write their name down at the end of the day 2) use mnemonic techniques * Be merciful to yourself, remembering names is NOT easy because they are arbitrary. 3) waiting for the name to pop up again in a conversation is fine... You could even use the trick of asking them to spell their name (though this may not work for phonetically consistent languages) But asking again is "braver", you run the risk of being seen as careless, or on the contrary, as willing to know the other person's name. *

don't worry about ending a sentence with a person's name, they are probably going to love it if you explain it's all about remembering their name people love being listened to, remembered and given attention; letting them know you care is a great way to catch their attention and score positive in the future

I find that the absolute worst thing that can happen to me when I'm trying to learn someone's name is to mix it up with a similar name even just once. It's not a big deal at FIRST, but it's almost a guarantee that incorrect association is going to be locked into my brain and I'll still be calling them by that wrong name the tenth or twentieth time I meet them. At best it'll become a 50/50 crapshoot and sometimes I'll use that wrong name and sometimes I'll get it right. Meanwhile, I actually AM good at names, so anyone else I met and didn't mix up their name early on, I'm able to consistently remember and get right...which just looks worse if I meet a couple or a group of people at the same time or something, and it's just that one person's name that goes down the wrong path in my brain.

I see you are a young guy. I am a slightly older guy. I work in a 1600-employee company, and everybody knows who I am. They all said, "hi, my name", and I just look busy and said hi. That I do not have a problem with. what I have a problem with is when a lower lever KEY employee decides to come back to the company, and I confidently think his name is Søren, and when we are in the lunch line my boss says "Hej Claus", which is his real name. That is a bad case of remembering names.

Everybody seems to remember my name, but I almost never remember anybody's name. I work in a restaurant as a dishwasher and I know almost none of the names of people outside of the kitchen, either because I never asked or because I forgot. Some of these people are new, but some I've been working with for over a year. I hardly use people's names in general, except family. P.S. I didn't know you played guitar. Are you good at it?
