THanks for the tutorial! I have a problem. Basic paint brush does not work on a mask layer after refining.

My best guess is that you have left your paint brush set to the Overlay blend mode in the toolbar. Select the brush and then check the dropdown in the toolbar. It should be set to Normal.

Hello Robin, why use the brush in overlay mode to clean up the mask? It seems like the normal mode operates no differently. What am i missing?

You can only see what's happening when you paint over an area that's grey. When you have the brush in overlay and use black, if you paint over dark grey it turns it to black but if you paint over white it doesn't paint. You can see this a lot easier if you draw a white to black gradient on an empty layer and then paint over the gradient with the brush in overlay mode. Also try switching to paint with white and watch the effect. This might be one for me to cover in a future video, it's a bit of an old school technique.

@@RobinWhalley Thank you! When I first tried this I ‘colored a bit outside the lines’ so the result was a bit sloppy. I followed up a bit more precisely with good results but then could not see the difference in using overlay. I will try your recommendation but I would love to see a video from you on this to better understand the nuance of the technique.

When you have a dual language keyboard as I have the square bracket keys are a no-no,so it is FAR easier to use CTRL+ALT to adjust the brush size .

Thanks for adding the tip. I mention the square bracket keys because it's the default shortcut setting in Affinity Products to control brush based tools.
