Just a fabulous video. I always wondered where the 'props' went to support the roof/ceiling while the RSJ went in and thought they were magically crammed at the edge. Seeing this shows they are just slightly further into the room along the joists. Quite mesmerising watching these videos for a reason I don't know :D Buying a house and planning to get it done so really appreciated watching it.

Great video. Just a quick question? - The blockwork wall that was removed, was it bonded in to the flanking wall or were there ties to the flanking wall? - It could have been a cross wall to help with wall panels? - Would be good to know if building control mentioned this or if it was deemed to be not buttressing the flanking wall.

Thanks for the informative video, were there any nibs on each side of the room where the RSJ beam sits to provide further support? In the current structure of joists, will it have been possible to lift the RSJ beam further upwards so that the joists are on the same level as the RSJ (after the joists are cut short to make way for the RSJ to fit between it), thereby making the RSJ beam concealed, resulting in a truly open plan space without any breaks in the ceiling due to a dropped beam?

In terms of "nibs", bricks from the inner skin of the wall on either side were removed, to create a hole where the RSJ could sit. It then sat directly on a metal plate which sat on the bricks. The hold was then filled in with replacement bricks once the RSJ was positioned correctly. And I don't believe the RSJ could have been lifted any higher "into" the ceiling space on this particular construction. Each home is built differently, though, so it may have been possible on another build.

The temporary beams are placed either side of the existing wall to support the ceiling. But, what I don't understand is, if the wall continues above the supporting wall, there is nothing directly under the higher lines of bricks . What holds the weight of that 'upper' wall before the RSJ is inserted?

It is, yes. Unfortunately we weren't able to film that part during the day. Once the RSJ was lifted flush against the ceiling, the padstones & packers were re-arranged so that the RSJ sat directly on the padstone, which was supported by new brickwork.

Thanks for the well presented and informative video. Would this sort of work fall under permitted development on a fairly modern house? The project you demonstrated in the video, what was the approximate cost of removing the wall and re-plastering?

Yes, this kind of project would usually be completed under permitted development rules, as long as the exterior of the house wasn't significantly altered. In terms of costs, builders on site, plus equipment, RSJ's, upright supports, removal of rubble etc would probably be around £1,500 - £2,000. The plastering would be a few days work at your average plastering rates of between £150 - 300 per day. You can certainly cut costs by doing much of the clearing, removal of cupboards / cabinets, carpets, rather than having the builder spend time doing that. This project included new glazing, tiling, and some new electrical wiring once the plastering was complete, so factor in those costs too.

Good idea to tell inexperienced people NOT to do this onto floorboards !, this is how to do it on a solid floor, and i,ve always know them as joist , its rafters in a roof ,

It is a single story building in portugal with a block and beam cast roof are acro,s supporting the ceilings satisfactory . I will be keaving amole stub walls at either end of the intended opening . You can't really go into and across the cavity on the external wall and therefore if the engineer calculates that a certain dimension of column is required then there is no alterative but to have that column support appear within the room. House owners have to take cognisance of this when wanting flush walls on the inside. If it is not going to work well structurally, then don't do it.

at the end of the film the Acrow was up against the BSB (RSJ) without a physical fixing. It's always important to have a screw or nail or something, particularly when multiple props are in use.

Thanks Zuluula. Planning would probably depend on whether the exterior of the building changed as a result of the renovation work. However, most internal remodels like this one don't require any planning permission. You will need to ensure the work complies with building regs, though.

Hi Michael. Not all of it, but enough to allow you to get right up to the top of the wall that's being removed. Basically, you remove the plasterboard ceiling so 1. Supports can be placed directly under the wooden ceiling joists, and 2. so the brickwork can be removed right up to the place where it meets the ceiling. Once the knock-through is complete the ceiling can be re-boarded & plastered.

Much depends on the strength / size of the steel, and the construction of the wall - there may be a bit of time spent removing / re-routing pipework, electrical cables and so on... but we would estimate in the low £thousands.

I don't think any demo company will give you a straight quote based on what you need. I would suggest you and friends do your own demo to save lots of money. And then call a load bearing company that specializes with this to install it for you.

To remove all of the wall increases the risk of collapse as props may be knocked during demolition, only a maximum of 450mm should be removed, the steel fitted and then the rest of the wall should be removed. If you are teaching through your videos please ensure the correct procedure is used.
