I thought I would do a quick change out, on one of these from the 50 's ! Wrong ! I hadn't a clue ! These are a real pain, IMHO ! But after watching this, I may have success, the next time I try ! Thank's ! 👍😊 Addendum : I just wanted to say that these things are testament to how well thing were engineered back in the day ! Screwed on knob's ? Who'd Tunk It ?

Oh my God, you just helped me pop open the oldest damn door knob I’ve ever come across. I was just getting ready to call a handyman because I needed to put new door knobs with real locks on them because I couldn’t figure out how to take the old one out. The piece with the screwdriver worked on the door, even though it had the old glass door knobs! I decided to try what you did and buy George, it worked. It popped it out! Next thing is to try to attempt to drill a hole, big enough for a regular door, knob, and then try to figure out how to fill that Massive door latch that’s in my door! Thanks for your helpful hint if you have any other videos on that before I call a handyman, that would be great to let me know. Thanks again so much that was a very informative thing that I learned how to do. Now to try to figure out if I can do the rest of it on my own, but that might be a different story.!

Hello. As a matter of fact, I was doing exactly what you were, replacing antique door knobs with Modern door locks. Here is a video where I talk about tips on how to drill those holes, its not as intimidating as it first seems. Have you ran into one where you remove one side of the knob but the shaft won’t pull through the latch? Did not know if there was a released that allowed the shaft to pull out? Only ran into this issue with the crystal ones that have the lock.

Thanks so much for the video. I'm having a issue where the lock piece the you mentioned was originally hammered in,sticking. And was just going to remove it and put the door handle back on. But I'm not sure if I can, do you know if that's possible? My stepson keeps getting accidentally locked in his bedroom and I desperately need to solve the issue today

Stupid question what is the piece called that the knobs screw onto? My place has the crystal glass knobs with the long plate and I can’t tell if the knob is stripped or the piece that it screws to. I just want to replace it with modern door knobs, but whoever lived in my place before me painted the doors and all over the parts to remove the knobs.

Very interesting, thank you! My 1930s knobs, the center square screw has two screws, instead of one for both knobs - so I'm not sure how to remove it! The rest was super helpful!

This wasn’t the fix for me - but it DID give me the fix I needed. I jammed several thin chunks of cardboard into the gap, then pushed in a plastic putty knife, and a silicone spatula - it created a nice gap, which released the pressure on the latch, and let me open the door. With the cardboard in there, you can also use a screwdriver or other steel tool without damaging the wood. Then I took the knob off before anyone forgets and closes the door again. lol.
