your videos have helped me out so much! thanks for posting them. can't wait to get a new engine in my jetta if I ever find one. the timing chain guide broke apart in and gummed up the works in turn spun 2 rod bearings.

it is a pain! the official manual says that you need a special frame, that you attach to the block from beneath. because in the van, the engine is "hanging" on its mountings. I did it once, of cause without the special frame. i more or less rested the whole block and transmission on old tyres and wooden blocks, unscrewd the mounting points and lifted the whole car. but you need a lift. dropping the engine to the floor with a crane may also be possible, but is more pain. :D

Thank you for your help. After being a basic tech for two years I’ve finally been able to pull my Jettas motor and trans. Hoping to go back in this weekend and have her driving by the end of the month. Would you or anyone have a link to the washer you should not lose? At 3:34 mine was missing

Do you think it would be possible to buy a used 3.2l VR6 and put it in my Škoda Fabia mk1? I'd like to do it so much because I love the car! It just lacks power with it's 68hp 1.4l MPI.

How much does it cost (ballpark) to replace a leaking valve cover (manifold?) gasket on a 24v VR6? About how many labor hours is it? Thanks!

Is this relatively close to removing a 12v VR6 from a MK4 Jetta? Looking for a good reference to put my VR6 back into a Jetta. Didn't have an engine in it to really reference what goes where, so was hoping to go off a good video on how to remove it, so I know how to put it back.

Thanks for all the videos. Hopefully you will see this. I’m in Alaska and I’m wanting to put a block heater in my v6. There is no vw dealer in my town. I call other towns and they don’t winterize the same as my town that gets -50. They don’t do block heaters. So my research I found my freeze plug is 37mm. For the life of me I can’t find a plug that size. I want to put it right next to oil cooler on right side in front of block. Any suggestions from anyone out there???thanks

+HumbleMechanic I just got to this part in my mk2 VR6 timing chain maintenance. When I raised the engine/trans, the axles disconnected from the trans output flanges and some ball bearings fell out of the inner CV joints on both sides. Does that mean it's time to change axles? Or can I just simply put the ball bearings back where they belong? Thanks for your time and help!

This brings back nightmares from removing the engine out of my Corrado. I dropped the transmission first, and then the engine. Both came out from the bottom with a transmission jack.

Are you going to do an 02J shifter swap In wookie ? It in the same process with my mr blurpurple. I decided go that route because aftermarket options open up. Also it super easy with motor removed and re aligning it so much easier compared to the stock 02A? Also I going to be running an a/c delco clutch. I got on super clearance pretty much stole it from a parts shipper. I was wondering if it a good match for a vr6 that just going to be a daily driver . Like the build keep up with updates👍🏻

I will be doing the 02j swap. I gotta a buddy hooking me up. Not sure on the clutch. I think I may be doing a BFI clutch. It's easy because they are local. :)

Why would VW put the timing system on the output side of the engine?? that makes no sense, I'm curious to see how they did it now though.

There's very little room at the front of the engine in the MK3 engine bay - I can only guess that putting the chain at the front would have meant removing the engine to work on the chain, etc. It is a PITA to remove the gearbox, etc. (I did one years ago), but that's preferable/easier (?) than removing the whole lot.
@dottorb7054

Yes, just getting to the tiny water pump means moving the engine either up or down to clear the frame rail. To get to the alternator means moving things around too to create space (at least in the MK IV). If the chains were on that side too it would definitely mean lifting the engine from the bay. As it is, to do the chain you still have to drop the tranny (at a minimum) and of course, it would be easier to do the job with the engine out of the bay, but it can be done. And I'm glad it's done!

They make it like this on purpose. So you would have to take into the dealer for service. Unless you a pretty good mechanic then you wouldn't have too.
@tylerbeard4092

For me personally, I feel using Steel-toed Boots is more dangerous working with something as heavy as an engine because if the engine lands on your steel toe and crushes it down you wont have toes... if the engine lands on your toes without it they may get crushed, but they are still attached (or at least mostly attached).
@HumbleMechanic

I think that Myth Busters proved that didn't they?

In part you're right, the steel toe shoes must be graduated in resistance according the specific job ,and many users for the reason you say are using polycarbonate toe shoes of high resistance.

Definitely, must be enough of an issue that they are pretty easy to get a hold of. But it was a good thing honesty my timing chain guides were right on the edge of their life. So did that cams and head gasket while I had it apart.
