How to remove and install a clutch on a Zenoah engine

This video shows you how to remove and install a clutch on a Zenoah engine. It is common for people to use a Zenoah engine in their Losi and TLR vehicles, to do so you need to use a CY clutch mounting plate. This also goes over how to install a clutch spring on the shoes, the different kinds of hardware that is used for different brands of clutch shoes and more!

Steve, thanks for a great informative video/explanation. I have a question I can’t seem to find an answer for anywhere: does the clutch plate have to be completely tight against the crank shaft, so as to not be able to turn it without the engine turning over? I have an ADA 54mm kit from DDM that the clutch plate just won’t tighten all the way down. The mounting bolt hits “bottom” before the plate gets completely seated. What do you think?

advice. one of my shoe bolts snapped an now have a easy out snapped off in set bolt all attempts so far to try get the puller hooked around back have failed very little to nil room to fit the hook. what im thinking is making a new puller an useing the back plate of clutch housing to pull but not sure if it will crack.

So only the clutch shoe bolt broke? Just get a new clutch plate. Cheap and easy: www.davesmotors.com/1140-55310-Zenoah-54mm-Clutch-Plate.html The main thing you don't want to have happen is the bolt that holds the clutch plate on the crankshaft to break. That one sucks and usually requires replacement of the crankshaft.

hey Steve, hope you're okay buddy. would the clutch binding on the bell be apparent when the engine is off? mines free but when I turn on the engine something seems to be jammed or my carb needs servicing.

If the engine is free when off, but binding when installed it is going to be the clutch plate. If the engine is binding on or off of the model then there is something else binding. I would inspect the ignition coil and flywheel first.

When using a piston stop. Loosening or tightening bolts, by putting too much torque using a wrench, can and will bend the cage on the rod bearings. I stopped using them.

You mentioned that the clutch shoes dig into the clutch bell. Does that happen on 100% of the Zenoah engines?

It is not 100% of the Zenoah engines, it is 100% of the time that a Zenoah clutch plate is used on a Losi 5IVE-T/TLR Buggy that is designed for the CY clutch plate to be used.

Some different engines have slightly different spacing on the clutches, so this shows how to remove and install a different clutch. Clutches are also a wear item and they need to be removed and replaced eventually. I didn't see any other videos out there that were very clear or good so I decided to make my own.

You will need to get the ADA Clutch conversion. If you are using a 320RC specifically then you will need the "outer drum side" on our site (gt201). If you have a 30.5cc or smaller you will want item gt200 on our site.

Much much do you torque down the clutch bolts when installing a clutch?

According to the Zenoah factory manual in N-m the standard is 6.4 N-m of torque, with an acceptable range of 4.9~7.8 N-m. I will admit to never using a torque wrench but using the "Snug enough" method.

Thanks for the reply, I normally use the same method but I picked up one of those metal shoes clutches from your store, I'm installing it today and want to make sure everything is right. That's about 4.7 lbs ft. I've probably been torque these things down too much in the past!

I'm have some trouble my clutch plate ano it's a friction fit but no matter how tight the bolt in the middle is the crank just spins inside the clutch plate any help would be appropriated

The Snugenuff or Guttentight method always work! but seriously the torque specs are the following: cylinder head bolts : 5 ft-lbs / 70 kg-cm crankcase : 4.7 ft-lbs / 65 kg-cm carb and intake manifold: 2.5 ft-lbs / 35 kg-cm spark plug: 8 ft-lbs / 110 kg-cm clutch: 4.7 ft-lbs / 65 kg-cm flywheel: 9.4 ft-lbs / 130 kg-cm exhaust manifold: 6.5 ft-lbs / 90 kg-cm coil: 2.4 ft-lbs / 33 kg-cm fan cover: 2.5 ft-lbs / 35 kg-cm

You can also remove the clutch bracket by simply screwing in the clutch bolts and slowly tightening each side until it pops out.

Hello! Yes the sm188F will fit the 5IVE-T, but you MUST use the Vertigo hex drive bell (sm187)
