I do love our dehumidifier, allows us to dry washing in the house without having moisture issues. Since getting it have not had any issues on the windows (even when we had really dodgy blown aluminium framed windows, now we have argon filled windows it still works beautifully. Would never go back to not having a dehumidifier unless I got a heat recovery air exchange unit but that's a way off if I ever decide to do with current house.

Cheers for the comment Craig. Out of interest what sort of dehumidifier have you got?
@cjhification

Charlie DIYte it's a Mecho DD8L I think, we got it as I wanted one that would work at any temperature, many units won't work in a cold loft or garage as they use compression and expansion, where as this unit uses a sorbant which it then dried out and then uses it again, it produces reasonable heat as well, which the other types of units don't. Was more expensive due to this but just works easily and has a laundry drying mode too which is great for speeding up drying. Only discovered your channel recently but it's great to see videos specific to UK as so many are based on other countries building regs, keep up the great work.

Actually the amount of condensation on a windows is caused by the 'dew point' of the air inside the property hitting a cold surface. Removing the moisture with extractors over Kitchen and in Bathroom and using them for at least an hour after finishing having shower or cooking will greatly reduce the water content of the air... far better not to have the moisture in the air in the first place than trying to vac it up after its in the room. Air exchange heat recovery will also reduce this problem but needs to be installed during renovation work.

@@saphire9823 just as Jim said you need an extractor when cooking, washing or drying clothes on radiators which is a overlooked problem, just remember when a fan is running you also need to introduce new airway into the building ie. Open a window at opposite side of building is the best way to replace old stagnant air between the two points. All houses should have heat recovery ventilation installed as standard, it is compulsory in Cannada.

@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 3 жыл бұрын
Gary, this is the one you need to look at kzbin.info/www/bejne/inqnk2CmmbShjq8 The problem you've got is a lack of air circulation in the house - probably made worse by the super well sealed windows. For a complete solution to your problem you should think about installing a Nuaire or Vent Axia PIV.

This tool is a revelation I now have two! That is a lot of condensation on those windows, do you hang clothes on radiators? Kitchen have a door? It's a real pain in winter. I invested in a dehumidifier as I also do the odd plastering job here and there and the dehumidifier removes a lot of the moisture. Imagine sticking two buckets full of water into a room, it has to go somewhere!
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 6 жыл бұрын
Zed Man The dehumidifier is a good idea - do you find the plaster ever cracks because you've dried out out too quickly? No clothes on radiators - we have a tumble dryer that vents straight outside, and I insist on the bathroom window being open during baths and showers, but the door to the kitchen is seldom shut. It's a wierd one mate - not sure why we get so much, save that we've got thermal curtains in some of the windows that stop any heat getting to the glass at night, and there're 4 of us and a dog breathing in a house with not a lot of windows open!! I'd love to invest in a Nuaire PIV goo.gl/8Qx5d9 as they're excellent according to a friend, but there's no obvious central place to install in our little cottage... Literally today sometime has suggested one of these on this comment feed goo.gl/5KxB7t. I'm intrigued and am going to try it out!!

Thanks for that, mate - I think it's high time I invested in a dehumidifier! The last two rooms that Gerard's plastered, I've had to leave the windows open for the best part of a week whilst I waited for the plaster to dry out - as the first room where I forgot to do this, the condensation completely wrecked the new wooden windows I had installed! As ever, thanks for the info Zed Man and have a great Xmas yourself!

I have the original Karcher window Vac and have been using on the windows for a good few years now. Its been used in two homes now. The only problem I have is after a while is will start to pump water out from the motor vents if I don't empty it out before it reaches the halfway mark as I can't us it on the windows in vertical plain as i have to switch it to horizontal plain to finish the bottom of the window. Have they addressed that with the new models?

Hello Charlie. I have a large parking area at the front of my house - block paving. I try to keep up with keeping it weed free and as clean as possible. Jet washing main way but filthy job and leaves large puddles of mucky water that dries out and leaves the muck behind!! I have been researching equipment to help me with this. I am feeling that the George Numatic is possibly the answer, even though I don't have solid floors anymore - just pale gray carpeting in the house. I feel the spot cleaning would be great for any children spills! I am wondering if the George Numatic is up to be used as almost an outside scrubber and sucker up of all the water residue resulting from the scrubbing. Might be a less messy alternative to jet washing. The drive is long enough for say four cars parked end to end to give you an idea of the area? Look forward to your comments thank you.

I moved into a place and didn't realize how single glazing would effect, never took any notice,as most places these days you take it for granted they are double glazed. Unfortunately it's a listed building and they won't let the owner modernise.,you would have thought in this woke world of energy conservation , insulation and preserving the world's resources you would hope theres compromise. So this tool is a must as with heating system having to work much harder, increase in bills and an asthma sufferer I have no choice. The next place I move to il definitely check the windows, I've learnt my lesson!!

Be interested to know your % humidity of your cottage to get that much condensation. I live in an old house and get nothing like that. I do get a good air change down the chimneys though 🙂
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 3 жыл бұрын
That video was very much superceded by this one bit.ly/3glMu6H On average RH levels around 47% based on 3 hygrometers positioned around the house. We have plenty of ventilation but in winter single glazed windows act like dehumidifiers, so if the curtains are closed at night preventing air circulation across the window, the dew point is quickly reached and boom - the perfect scenario for condensation.

Argon filled are ok, but you'd be better having Thermally broken spacer bars or 'Warm Edge' spacer as they don't transfer heat anywhere near as much as Aluminium, then if you want to add Argon filled just to finish the units off.

Unbelievable that in the 21st century, there are people in the UK still living in houses without double or triple glazing. It's like throwing money through the windows with extra heating costs in the Winter. I bet the rest of the house is uninsulated too. What's worse in this case is that lead is an even better conductor of heat than the glass.

I just got the Karcher WV6 Premium at nearly £80.00!! and am really disappointed to say the least as it will not suck up the drops which just drip to the bottom on the windowsills which is the very thing I was hoping this machine would deal with especially as I live with lung issues. Unfortunately I am not allowed to replace windows or do other things to the property. Any other thoughts please of what I could try (in a small space here) and what would be the best cloth to mop up the condensation - maybe a shammy??

All that moisture has come from the lungs of whoever sleeps in the room. You need double glazing, ventilation and heat to dry the room out, everything in there will have a high moisture content from the bedding to the furniture. Once that's all reduced you stand a chance of getting rid of the condensation. All bedrooms are the same. Speaking from 25 years in the glazing industry.
