Looks like you have a good block to work with ---- I think otherwise you would have said there was a crack in the block between cylinders ---- so that's GOOD ---------- the one's I don't like are the ones you can't see ------ so let's hope you have a good one after start up and has ran for twenty minutes or so ------ will keep our fingers crossed for you ----------- I have used a telescoping magnet to reach down and snatch out those Valve Stem Keepers --- that works pretty good too ------- Hope you and yours have a Good Week ----- See Ya on your next one --------Rodney

Thanks Rodney, yeah the 59 ab appears to be in fantastic shape with no bad cracks. The 8ba im pulling valves from will need valve seats but so far should otherwise be a good block. Picking up another 8ba soon, that one has a bad ish crack but one that can be pinned. Hope youre enjoying that 38!

I've got to pull a few valves soon myself. Thanks for sharing! Gonna be a cool build.

Flathead valves are huge pain. Just one opinion. I have an 8BA here from a 49 F1 that needs torn down before it gets rebuilt, but I’ve been procrastinating.

Yeah agreed, Im still only half done yanking these valves haha time is a precious commodity and with archery elk season approaching things are gonna get very interesting

Just acquired my first flathead and it's a car I always wanted: a '50 Merc. Engine was recently rebuilt but I have a broken valve. But even using a crowbar, it's extremely difficult to compress the valve spring. The valve springs are painted grey. Are they color coded for compression strength? In none of the videos I've watched are the springs this difficult to compress. Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated. You have a new subscriber!

Thanks for watching and subscribing! 1st answer, no, they are not color coded. Engine builders have special scales for measuring valve spring tension. Different cams require different spring tension. This is why you see things like isky double valve springs with one spring inside another. Its pretty hard to say from here but valve springs are generally pretty stiff. If you have a local engine rebuild shop call em and see if theyre willing to measure your spring tension (you'll have to pull the spring and take it to em) welcome to the wild, wonderful and sometimes expensive world of flatheads!

@@mdogg1604 what fun is it if its easy? You can probably buy a scale as well. They arent ridiculously expensive

Found out today that spinning the engine over to release compression on that particular valve spring made all the difference. Used my crowbar to raise the spring enough, then a couple whacks on the broken valve stem to release the keepers allowed said valve stem to be removed easily. Yeah, I think a scale could be a valuable addition to my toolbox. Sure feels good when a plan comes together. lol @@tradrodsandcustoms
