Well done 👏 I have a couple of questions. Can I use methyl cellulose by itself to repair small tears without reinforcing it tengkujuh paper? Also with regards to glue removal would less acetone concentration decrease the likelihood of ink bleed through? Dr. Paul thanks for the conservation tutorial.

Michael, thank you for the kind words. Yes, you can use methyl cellulose by itself but keep in mind it's not a particularly strong adhesive and is soluble in water. It won't do a very good job bonding an end-to-end tear in paper. But it does have uses without tengujo paper for sure. Regarding the use of Acetone, if you look at the Teas chart you'll see it's less polar than water and EtOH but has greater dispersion forces. I'm not sure either of these make it a particularly good solvent of inks but it does offer different solvent properties than water or EtOH so may remove ink elements the other two solvents don't. The problem is PVA is an exceptionally difficult glue to remove once it's polymerized so you have to go after it with something effective and all of the effective solvents for polymerized PVA that i'm aware of include Acetone. Water, EtOH, and/or Bestine are not effective. I guessed that the glue we had present was PVA which is why i used the solution i did. My experience is you get ink bleed with any glue removal using solvents because solvents that are effective at removing adhesives tend to also solubilize inks. So the trick is in controlling the delivery and flow of the solvents and minimizing the total time you expose the inks to them.

@@DrPaulKosnik thank you for the useful information. Lol I'm having flashbacks from chemistry classes in college of the polarity of different solvents.

Congrats Dr Paul on getting this cover looking so good and restoration-free. I really like Bestine for such tasks with subsequent scraping the glue off. The cover looks great and no surprise you are happy with the results.

Super glad there wasn’t any color loss when the book bled a bit.. gave me some chills watching you slowly pull apart that small corner piece. Glad the glue came off 👍 it’ll be interesting to see if this book grades out universal or conserved. Thanks for sharing!

If there was any color loss, it's impossible to tell because it is so much more vibrant with all of the dirt cleaned away. I think it looks great!

Great work! Definitely gave me a cringe worthy moment when you forced the removal of the piece but it definitely turned out well 👏

Do you have a video talking about Naphtha?
@DrPaulKosnikАй бұрын
I do not-Naptha has some distillates that can leave stains. I prefer either Bestine or Un-Du depending on the job. Here is one example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIW3gp2wrZKcZs0

Where would one find the tengojo paper that you use. I don’t need a large amount. Is there somewhere I can get it by the yard. I have been using kozo paper, it’s similar and works good, but it’s not as transparent

Ravage, i purchased mine from Talas but i did purchase a large quantity. If you tune into the live show at 7:30 Central Sunday evening, i'll ask my cohosts where they source theirs from though!
