After watching your video about 5 times it gave me enough confidence to remove the metal grommets from the inside of my athletic shoes and it worked just like in your video. The key was getting the washer out first and working around all sides to remove it. I can't thank you enough because this was the only shoe I could find that fit my 6E width feet and I know the metal grommet inside the shoe would have irritated my very sensitive skin.....Thank you!

THANK YOU! I messed up on a laminated cotton zipper bag and put two grommets in before I should have. It was a fatal error to the bag project and my only option was to start over which made me want to cry. The hubs found your vid and in 10 minutes was able to remove the grommets without ruining the laminated cotton. Now I can finish the bag and give it to his sister tomorrow!

It's surprising how little (or poor) info there is on grommets on the internet in general (big emphasis on eyelets over grommets, which I don't understand). Thank you so much for making this video! You were straight forward without any filler. Now I'm going to see if you have a video on how to install grommets!

I just tried to use a drill on my well set grommet that has a split lip. Don't do it. The grommet will turn around anyway, and since it is well set, it cuts the fashion fabric while turning. Maybe I'll try to hold onto the grommet with a needle-nose plier while using the drill, but seeing you getting the grommet out just with the pliers seems to me so much easier... Thanks for the demonstration!

Also, the metal grommet is on the inside of the shoe in the lace eyelet. It looks exactly like in your video with a washer in the middle.

Is there a method or handy tool that removes grommets in such a way that they could be used again?

Unfortunately not - setting the grommet warps and stretches the metal in the center causing it to roll or splay outwards. Once that's done its impossible to get it back looking like new without at least some catches, splits or dents, unless you wanted to melt them down and cast them again - but it's way easier and cheaper to just buy new grommets.

The reason they're falling out is because the holes are cut out and not stretched with an awl.

Holes for grommets this size cannot be stretched out with an awl. Any size above 1/4 of an inch will need to be cut out.
