Good method but you cut the branch collar. If the branch collar is difficult to locate It would be better to leave a stub so within a few years the branch collar will be evident and the decaying stub can be pruned off.

He cut into the branch collar! Don't do this, you can easily see the change in angle where the branch collar meets the branch and he cut probably an inch into that. Cut just outside of the branch collar and it will heal properly.

I wish all the landscapers knew how far out to cut... They kill so many trees cutting too close and they get heart rot and hollow out and fall on homes and cars.

yea.. this method is useless if you are trying to remove a tree branch that is far up and not very accessible OR the branch is too thick to use a twiddly pruning saw... a chain saw or pole saw is the only thing you can use.
