For anybody who's not a too familiar changing a tire. Flip the wrench over, It's a lot easier to push down on a tire wrench [to loosen or tighten]. Start the wrench handle from level or a bit above level. Lock your arms straight and push down adding the weight of your body [like a bear pushing with it's arms and shoulders]. Keep your fingers from mashing into the ground by not wrapping them around the handle, but by holding them horizontally on top of the wrench. I use my foot to push down, but be careful not to let your foot slip off the end of the tire iron [it can slice a horrible gash in your leg] :-)

Much smaller kit, too. I'm sure this has more capability, but the little craftsman kit I have saved me so much damn money and frustration that I can't help but shill it for this kind of use-case. Way easier too since you don't need to drill or anything. I was really skeptical at first, but it did all 4 wheels in like 15 minutes tops.

Actually you're both wrong, having good points but missing the main one. When a torque wrench is building up its spring pressure it should not go from high tension to instantly loose that many times. You take the tool out of calibration. I'm not sure of you guys but I was actually trained through automotive manufacturers and this was a big no no. As well what's the situation if you have a nut that is tighter than the value you're trying for, will you leave that nut alone to not go too hard on it?

@@kevinsosa1589 This is nonsense. It will not affect calibration any more than using the torque wrench to click to specified torque. If you can find me any source that actually demonstrates this is true I'll PayPal you a dollar. Reversible torque wrenches work fine in forward and reverse, they are not harmed by not reaching a torque threshold, and provided you aren't going insane, turning past the click point will not damage them either as they are no longer relying on the internal springs. Basic physics matter here.

Auto zone sells special impact sockets with fine thread in it, and it works. You remove the socket by clamping it in a bench vice, and then you use your impact to take the socket off. It doesn't really get damaged, so it's reusable.

I had a locking lug nut key break removing one, just used an undersized socket on each one with a few taps of a hammer to remove them. Took about a minute per wheel. Removing the lug nut from the socket took a bit longer though but a grade 8 bolt helps.

I like that set, whats the brand? At the shop I work at we do it different... bit more annoying. *on lift* 1. Take off all normal lugs 2. Rotate rim so lock lug is at top 3. Wack the bottom of the wheel outward 4. Use a turbo/extractor socket Has worked everytime so far

As a mechanic. When inspecting used cars, Most of the time wheel locks are already lost. I just use a set of 12 point sockets I got from harbor freight. Hammer one on that’s about the size of the lock and turn it off with a breaker bar.

I was told by the Snap On man (in the early 80’s when I was an apprentice ), do not use torque wrenches to undo fasteners ( like in this video), unless it’s left hand thread as it will take the torque wrench way out of spec. I bought my first ‘click type’ off Snap On again in the 80’s, it goes back for recalibration but it’s still going and will see me out until I retire !

Cheaper way is to get a slightly smaller 12pt socket and hammer it on the lock bolt so the points grab onto the lock bolt. Useful if you just plan on doing this one time and don't want to get the entire kit.

Years ago I parked my car all day in the city. Then when driving home my wheels were rattling when I ran over some humps. As soon as I got home I noticed someone removed 3 of my wheel nuts including the lock nut on both sides of my rear wheels. I busted 2 threaded bolts on the axles on the drive back home but luckily was able to get replacements.

If you go buy a 12 sided socket a bit smaller than the round lock nut, you can beat it on and turn then turn the locking nut off. It worked perfectly on my 2018 Ford Edge. Much cheaper than that tool set and I have a pretty good 12 point socket to reuse!

Ive heard from an actual mechanic that the locking lug-bolt's main purpose is to prevent the wheel from being as easily stolen, since there are a lot of thieves out there looking for tires since they're not cheap. Coming with the rims just makes their life 100x easier, and thats what makes a locking lug bolt have its purpose. Doing that just defeats the purpose...

Yeah I just welded a nut to the end of mine. Surrounded it with a damp rag so the welding didn't damage the rim. No expensive tool needed besides the equipment I already own
