I'm a collector and we did an extensive study on this as little to no real data is available on this matter. For the study we used a lot of models of various makers and this is our final findings. Paint rash/micro bubling is the effect of paint oxcidation and the main reasons are: oxygen, UV light and heat. These three factors combined with time is the result. Worth noting that various paints of different makers react differently and even the colour play part. Red, black(dark colours) and even white rash more easily. Silver tend to be very resistant. Kyosho and Hotwheels & Elite models biggest culprits and resin models don't show rash. Cheaper models like Maisto and Bburago less likely to rash. AutoArt the least likely metal body models to show rash.

Great tutorial mate. I've been collecting die cast models since more than twenty years and I've seen many ways of how paint rash invades models and I have to say that sometimes paint rash is a matter of paint but some other times is a matter of metal and it's impossible to get rid of that defect because that rash is not from the paint it comes from metal and if you try to fix it with sand paper and polish compounds metal will come up and the only way to fix it is to strip paint and repaint the part. That's what happened in this case with those white silver dots that have came up after sanding.
@ROBSMODELCARS6 жыл бұрын
True, I have repainted quite a few over the years as stripping it off and repainting gives the best results, but some collectors aren't confident enough to strip a model and repaint it. So this gives them a chance to get the model looking a lot better without going down the painting path.

Great! Thanks 4 video. I was evaluating with a friend that every brand has a type painting on its own. pay attention when you happen to perform this intervention on the ferrari kyosho models, as the paint has a much finer thickness than the hot wheels and you would immediately get to the bottom, which will have to be repainted. This may be a major problem for those haven’t experience in disassembly and painting

I have read that the old budget models from Burago are cheap toys and can't compete with the higher end models made by companies such as Kyosho or Hot Wheels yet the Ferrari F40 models and Porsche 911 models i own by the original Burago don't suffer from paint rash or diecast corrosion and those original F40 models are close to being 30yrs old, when compared to Kyosho, almost every F40 model has paint rash, seems to me that the Italian made Burago's are of higher quality diecast metal and better made.
@ROBSMODELCARS4 жыл бұрын
Paint rash is caused by a contamination on the metal surface before the model is painted, and then it blisters though over time. This can happen to any model that is poorly prepared prior to painting.
@secretm.58966 жыл бұрын
But since it comes from UNDER the paint, I think that it would eventually come back again with time, cuz the source is not gone. I think that the only real way of getting rid of it is removing the original paint completely until you see the bare metal, then prime it and paint it with an airbrush after you've mixed your color to perfection. After that you must add a nice coat of clearcoat and voilà!
@MrNew1226 жыл бұрын
Your method is correct, but it's also very complicated, especially for people who are not painting experts. First, it's almost impossible to match the paint perfectly because some color fading occurs on the model over a period of time. Second, some model cars have pearl, or metal flake finishes which makes the matching process even more difficult. Taking the model apart and repainting it, is the ultimate solution, but taking apart a $200 Kyosho or a BBR that may have 1,500 pieces, is a serious risk for someone who does not have experience.
@ROBSMODELCARS6 жыл бұрын
Exactly, this method is to make the model look better than it does covered in rash, and most people are able to make this method work. But fully repainting a model is the best way to deal with rash and to have a perfect paint finish, not everyone can do that though.

I bought the Tamiya polish's on ebay and got the sand paper from my local hardware store. Just try to remove the rash with a fine sandpaper first, only use the very coarse paper as a last resort but remember that some rash has lifted up from the metal, so it is possible to go through the paint which will reveal the base metal. In which case paint repair will be necessary

Rob Love your videos!! Will you ever be customizing your Top Speed Pagani Zonda? I am interested in getting one and removing the wheels to try and paint them a more correct color. Just curious how difficult it would be to remove the wheels.
@ROBSMODELCARS6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Topspeed Zonda has been completely rebuilt into a Zonda GR race car. I have been posting updates on my Facebook page - RobsModelCars, and also a full build dairy on www.DiecastXchange.com Wheels are easy to remove, turn the model upside down and unscrew the floor. Remove the floor from the body and you will see that both wheels are attached by a metal rod. Mine just pulled out from the body. Brakes are just sitting behind the wheel, slide them both back on the metal rod to the center of the metal rod. Cover them when repainting the wheels, then uncover them and re assemble them in reverse of how you removed them.

@ROBSMODELCARS4 жыл бұрын
You have to be very careful doing this method on model cars. It is a 50/50 if it will work, if it doesn't, it will go through the paint and the model WILL need to be repainted. Most model car paint does NOT have a clear coat over the top, so once you start sanding through the layers, the metallic will be ruined. Do NOT do this on metallic paint!
@AdamSmith-fe9jf6 жыл бұрын
Another great video, Rob. One thing I don’t quite get is when you sand the panel, why does the clear not need to be reapplied? How do you go straight to polishing the body unless there is still clear, but for Hot Wheels especially, I know they don’t use much clear from the factory in the way you use 3-4 coats for your own custom models. So, wouldn’t the clear have been sanded right through, or was there some left? Also, you mentioned you’re not being thorough for sake of keeping the video brief, yet still the finish came out like new. Had you been more thorough and spent additional time, could you have yielded a better result with more shine and depth, or is the shine capped after certain amount of polishing? Could you also achieve more luster by lightly using a Dremel with buffing wheel?
@ROBSMODELCARS6 жыл бұрын
They paint these models in a one coat system, meaning the red color is a gloss finish, so when you sand them down, you bring the gloss level back by polishing. When I paint my custom models, I use a basecoat color followed by a clearcoat, if i sanded through the clear, and tried to polish the basecoat, it would not come back shiny. More time spent on the part would have got some of the rash I missed on the edge of the hood. But a little more polishing in each step would give a better shine.

I’m gonna try this out on my models but I’m afraid it might take the paint off. Assuming that the same model faces bubbling again, will the paint eventually come off after repeated sanding?
@ROBSMODELCARS4 жыл бұрын
The thickness of the paint and how badly it is bubbling will depend on the results of this method. Be aware that if you have to keep sanding to remove the bubbling, you may go straight through the paint and hit raw metal. Try this first on an area that is not as noticeable, like a lower side or rear, rather than a hood or a roof. Some models are just not savable and need to be repainted. Good luck

No problem mate, just remember that the paint thickness on all models is unknown, so try first on a lower panel or so and see how it goes. Should be similar between diecast and resin, but maybe a little thinner on resin but resin don't have rash so no need to sand them, but you can polish them with these Tamiya polishing compounds.
