Thanks for the video. I have an old 2010' macbook pro, I bought it, used it, the password is empty(meaning nothing), then apple indicated upgrade available, I upgraded. After the upgrade, the empty password doesn't work anymore. I tried your method but it has different screen than your's. Since I don't have a password, I tried 'forgot password', then it gave a different screen than your video, it still not working(unlocking). any good suggestions?

I know it's been a while but someone else will find this useful. Did you press enter. And then on the next screen select (Mac OSC) then select the user name you want to change the password for. Enter your new password click save and then restart.

The hard drive is encrypted. It's not possible without unlocking the drive first.

Otis Kopp If you don't know the password (which is normally just the account password for the computer unless the person manually went in and added a firmware password through the recovery partition) you'll have to bring it into an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store and they can unlock it using a hash code if you have proof that it is actually your machine.

I heard if the HDD doesn't show it means its encrypted and you cannot reset the password. You can however wipe the drive and reinstall OS as far as I know.
