As everyone knows, farmers spray chemicals on their crops to protect them from pests. These chemicals, called pesticides and insecticides, help save the crops and the fruits and vegetables that grow on them. However, they are not good for our health.
Health Risks of Pesticides
Consuming food with pesticides and insecticides can cause:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Intestinal disorders
- Skin rashes
- Eye tearing
- Blurred vision
- Low blood pressure
- Low heart rate
- Nervous system breakdown
- Cancer
You might think washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly before cooking or eating them is enough. But a report by the USA’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA), US Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that rinsing with water only removes dirt and surface toxins.
What Can We Do?
One option is to eat only organic fruits and vegetables. Organic produce is grown without chemicals, including pesticides and insecticides. However, organic fruits and vegetables are often more expensive and not always available.
Easy Home Solutions
Since we can't stop eating fruits and vegetables, here are some easy ways to remove pesticides and insecticides at home using common household products:
1. Vinegar Solution
Vinegar helps kill bacteria and remove pesticide residues.
- Mix one part vinegar with three parts water.
- Soak the produce for 5-10 minutes.
- Rinse with clean water.
2. Salt Soak
Sea salt (not rock salt) helps clean produce of chemicals.
- Mix 1/4 teaspoon of salt for every liter of water and stir until dissolved.
- Submerge the produce and let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly under cold running water to remove the salt taste and residue.
3. Baking Soda
Baking soda creates an alkaline environment that pesticides and bacteria can’t survive in.
- Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 4 cups of water and stir until dissolved.
- Soak the produce for 15 minutes.
- Rinse and rub under running water.
According to research by the University of Massachusetts, this method breaks down toxic compounds and reduces up to 90% of pesticides and insecticides.
These methods are simple and easy to use at home. How do you clean your fruits and vegetables to ensure maximum purity? Tell us in the comments!

You cannot remove pesticides from fruits and vegetables as suggested here. Crops are sprayed throughout the growing cycle and so will be present in all cells, not just the surface. Also it is not only our own health that we must consider, many farmers become sick from using these chemicals, skin and lung diseases, cancers are all common. Pesticides also make our water supplies toxic and kill wildlife. Choose organic whenever you possibly can.

You can reduce by about 30% if you wash esp with baking soda water. Likely by reducing what's on the surface. That is over years a big reduction in the amount of pesticide taken in. Probably more impactful in fruit veg where you eat the skins. Organic is great but not affordable to many. The UK and the US release "dirty dozen" and "clean 15" which tells you which veg & fruit have very high levels and ideal get organic versus those not to bother like avocado.

@emilyb5557 yes, the dirty dozen list is very helpful for people to understand what is sprayed the heaviest.

Unfortunately 99% of people are ignorant to the fact that pesticides and herbicides are cancerous. Buy organic or grow your own.

ACCORDING TO SEVERAL DRS THAT HAVE REPORTED THE STUDIES, ESPECIALLY DR. MICHAEL GREGER SALT IS VERY SUCCESFUL. BUT YOU NEED TO MIX THE SALT OR THE BAKING SODA 1 TO 9 PARTS OF WATER= 1 PART SALT OR BAKING SODA W/ 9 PARTS OF WATER. FOR EX. 1 TBLSP SALT W/ 9 TBLSP OF WATER. THE RECIPES HERE ARE WRONG. THE VINEGAR WAS NOT SUCCESFUL IN CLEANING MUCH OF THE CHEMICALS. IT WAS A VERY LOW PERCENTAGE WHILE THE SALT & SODA WERE THE MOST SUCCESFUL -75-80% OF PESTICIDE RESIDUES. 🌺☮️💟

How do we remove systemic pesticides, insecticides , fungicides, etc, with your suggestions? All the mentioned authorities allow synthesis of these chemicals and are responsible for making all these pesticides/insecticides available for use.

Now how do we remove the pesticides that have been absorbed through the skin into the fruit? The pest is possibly less harmful than the pesticide! Please convince us that the fruit will be pesticide free
