Just a tip, when removing the steering wheel do not fully remove the retaining nut / bolt. Loosen the bolt then tug the steering wheel and the bolt will stop the wheel hitting you in the face. Once the wheel is loose then fully remove the bolt.

Great vid. Replaced my SL350 2003 steering wheel with woodrim. No real problems. Had to wedge steering wheel with metal bar to release 10mm hex centre bolt. Old wheel came off easily. There are marks on the spindle to show the centre, also a mark on the steering wheel to show centre. had to disconnect both batteries AND LEAVE FOR 30 MINUTES to discharge system. After reconnect all systems including radio were intact. Apparently the Merc AUDIO 30 and the Command system do not have a CODE. That was from a Merc dealer! The 'ESP not available' warning light showed, until I drove the car on the road, then it reset with 'No Malfunctions' recorded. It is easy to accidently move the backplate which I assume refers to the steering sensor, which I admit to doing, but this was easily corrected as it needs to slot into a hole in the steering wheel itself. Perhaps this caused the ESP light??? Best to take care with this, as you remove the wheel. Thankyou killerhertzmercedes.

I just changed mine on my 05 SL, my steering wheel angle it self is off when I’m going straight I have to hold it at an angle, maybe an alignment ?

Thank you for this very detailed video! I just got my new steering wheel (you may watch a short today's video on my channel where I unbox it) and now I need to replace my OEM steering wheel with the new one. So after watching this video I have only one question - since I'm going to swap steering wheels what is the best way to mark steering wheel position? In your video you actually didn't not replace the steering wheel thus you had blue tape on both steering wheel and wheel column. Thanks in advance!
@killerhertzmercedes4 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped, use tape on the exterior but once you open up the wheel and remove the airbag. use Tip-Ex or a marker pen to mark the position of the wheel against the Spindle. cheers!

Any tips for removing the centre bolt? Mine is so damn tight, the hex tool is starting to damage it. I have put some penetrating oil around it, will try with an air tool next

Hey, thanks for the vid! Any idea of a facelift for the clk500? Any other stearing wheel we can use from newer module cars.

Two qestions: 1.- So no worys for the car electrick sistem after you plub batery back? 2.- After unpliging batery the chance off airbag deploying is zero?
@killerhertzmercedes4 жыл бұрын
Disconnect battery for at least 15 mins before removing wheel. Once finished simply reattach battery.

One more thing i wonder. The onlly reason i want to take off stering whell is to see what is the thing that makes strange farting noises when i turn the whell. Is it nesesery to unplug car battery?

When replacing the steering wheel for a 209 body style, is there lock on the steering column to make sure steering wheel is straight when the wheel fits on the column? Or can the wheel be adjusted to center with the spline?

What about the airbag light? Usually in MB you have to use OBD2 to switch the light off. In Japanise cars enough to disconnect the battery
@killerhertzmercedes2 жыл бұрын
The Airbag light wont be triggered if the battery has been disconnected and after replacing, its all plugged in correctly again.

Hey boss, thanks for the video. I had a new rack put in and the universal joint/ coupler had to be removed in order for it to be installed. I went to get the car tracked but the wheel is half a turn off, I'm assuming the rack wasn't completely centred before it went on. Can i simply unbolt the steering wheel and reposition it to centre again or will this mess with sensors?
@killerhertzmercedes3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I wouldnt mess with it as you risk making it worse, ideally get a decent garage to take a look at it otherwise your problems could double. Cheers
@T1G3RKN333 жыл бұрын
@@killerhertzmercedes I sorted it in the end. If you set your steering to what you deem to be the centre of the rack, after resetting the squib and clock spring the steering wheel will fit back on straight regardless of the position on the splines.
