Thank you for posting this. I haven't painted in years due to depression and you just saved all my paints. I'm so grateful to be able both physically and mentally use them again.

Nice advice 🤗 One of the best advices I’ve got was from my old boss (he and his wife ran an artist’s materials shop): Use pliers and try to TIGHTEN the cap a little bit more - before you try to open it. Then you don’t ruin the threads since you are screwing in the “right” direction. I’ve often found this helpful - it cracks the paint and the cap becomes easier to open 😊

Good tips, Florent. I use thin pincer nose pliers to unlossen caps from side not from top. So far, no problem. Another tip is when I have cleaned thread from paint, just add a little poppyseed oil or linseed oil to thread before replacing cap final time at end of a painting session.

Running the tube cap under hot water also always works. I had a tube of cremnitz white I hadn't opened in nearly 6 years and it really helped

Lol, the struggle is real! Last year, I had 3 tubes burst at the bottom just like this, and paint got everywhere. It was, of course, pthalo blue. 😂

Thank you so much! I searched for this as my new tubes I just bought on clearance were sealed shut. The hot water worked like a charm!

Thanks so much for the tip. I have gone through this before and what works for me is just expose the tube of paint in hot running water from the faucet for a few seconds and it usually works with no trouble. The real problem is when the top breaks. Great video!

I tried this with the hot water and It worked. I had given up on it but the water in microwave for I minute and magic, opensessamee. I used a toothpick to clean the treads and cap. Perfect. 😊

Also, don't tighten the cap completely. Snug it down all the way, then back it off a half twist. This helps to prevent a seal and from breaking the cap itself.

Another tip might help that I do with my nail polish... is to put a light coat of Vaseline around the threads where you screw the cap on. It works great for nail polish 😊✌🏼🌺💫

I put my tubes under hot running water, periodically checking to see if the cap loosens. If worse comes to worse (which it has!) where I'm utterly unable to reopen a tube, I finally bought a tube wrench. Works like a charm!

I did some serious damage to my hands once trying to open some pretty old tubes.... the lids which are somewhat serrated at the top for grip, literally tore through my skin and didn't realize until after the third tube that wouldn't open and I was bleeding lol. Dedicated.!

Many, many thanks for this video. Someone gave me some very old tubes of paint - the paint is still soft inside but the caps are mucky and VERY stuck. I don’t want to throw them out so I will try this ... it’s my last chance, so hopefully it works! When I say the caps are mucky, I mean really mucky!

WOW this is great..Thanks so much..... I did lose my temper, blame the poor husband🙂 I have like 40 tubes with same problem. Could the reason be leaving tubes inside enclosed porch each color in individual boxes with good covers still, temperatures in winter drop below -10 degrees.? well this year after i clean them all I will leave them inside the house until next May when i come back to the mountains.

If you get desperate after all the other tricks fail, you can grip the top of the tube (the harder metal part) with pliers then use the other pliers to twist the cap. Be careful to not puncture or smash the tube. Also I soak my caps in a paint stripper (or mineral spirits, etc) to get the paint out of the cap's threads - instead of the scraping with a sharp object.

Cool. Any recommendations for how to get caps off of liquin or galkyd? Thanks
@devandestudios1285 жыл бұрын
With liquin you can throw it away, blow up the bottle, shoot it. But no really, pry the outer, black cap off. There is a clear cap under it. Once you get the cap off the bottle clean the threads and cap as well as possible to help prevent it from cementing itself back on like super glued steel. Galkyd is just a matter of keeping the threads clean and the above measures in the video should help.

Love the video and a new-to-me way to get that cap off, but you also need to clean those threads too! ; )
