Learned that trick taking grease off of soup in the kitchen. I use paper towles however. Has a better grip in the foam and any wax on top. I do it when we have heated the honey for bottling. Honey is less viscus and looses grip on the wax/bubbles easier

After put the wrap out to the bees to clean up. No loss

If it floats on the top just leave it. Don’t bottle it. You should probably let it sit for at least 24 hrs

Letting the honey sit after the filtering process is the norm for me. As for me and others, the honey foam just doesn't go away. So I have tried slowly spooning it off but it is very tedious. I seen someone demonstrate the plastic wrap trip and I was impressed and tried it myself with much success and a lot less time spent spooning it. As with all my videos, its just a way, not the way to accomplish tasks of beekeeping. I show what has worked for me and may work for you. Another thing for the foam, customers may not like the foam on their honey and want a clean, clear product. I do what I can to maximize my honey yield and provide the desired products. Thanks for your comment- 6AF.

thanks for the tip! What kind of extractor do you use or recommend? This will be my first year to harvest and looks like at least 10 medium supers to start.
@6acrefarmstead2245 жыл бұрын
Stephen Biggers - I have a Brushy Mountain 9 frame radial extractor. I can spin 9 medium or shallow frames or put the inserts in it and spin out 3 deep frames at a time. A motorized is nice but at the time of purchase, I couldn’t justify spending 400 dollars more for a motor. The hand crank has worked fine for me. When I ordered it, I had Brushy give me 10% off and also had it delivered for free to a local conference I was attending and they were setting up at. If you order one, check online reviews and ensure it can process what you have (for me- 9 frames in a super). I also have a 3 frame extractor and it took forever to extract a lot of supers. Also, my 9 frame doesn’t take up a lot of room in storage compared to the larger models in the market. Do your research and buy what will work for you but at a minimum, get at least a 9 frame. With that many supers to extract, you could sell off a lot of that honey and make a really good down payment on that new extractor. Basically, my bees pay for my upgrades now. Be it nuc sales or honey sales, I reinvest a bunch of that money into my beekeeping operations. Last year it was dehumidifiers, this year will be a Mann Lake observation hive.

U can hang the wrap with the bubbles and let it drain in a container and use it at home
@6acrefarmstead2244 жыл бұрын
Dave frater - yes you could do that.

does honey smell bad? i bought honey and had foam on it so came across ur video it is natural.
@6acrefarmstead2244 жыл бұрын
Fermented honey will have an "alcohol smell" to it when opened and doesn't taste good at all. Goldenrod honey in particular, has a scent of a locker room which is normal but it has a great flavor. Any beekeeper who has goldenrod in their area and the bees collect it for winter stores will tell you. As for foam, this is from extraction and is probably trapped air bubbles that will float to the surface of the honey. I don't know the science of why they don't pop when the finally rise but foam on top of honey can be unsightly. Alot of beekeepers try to remove this layer of foam before bottling and when I sell a bottle with small noticeable layer of it, I explain to my customer that this is normal with locally produced honey.

Can I use the white foam ?
@6acrefarmstead2242 жыл бұрын
You can. Its just air trapped in honey. If you are. selling your product, your customer may not like it and be off-put by it. If you remove it prior to bottling, it will produce a cleaner product for sale.

Can the foam be left in the honey for creamed honey ? Does it affect it at all?
@6acrefarmstead2244 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I have never made creamed honey so I cannot state how this would affect the final product. But for bottling and selling, its all about product appearance, especially for the uneducated consumer. If they see honey foam floating on top of my bottle, they may believe something is wrong with it and I lose that sale because they don't buy it for that reason. I try to present the best product and try to command top dollar for that product.

@@6acrefarmstead224 I just bought my first pail of honey from a local supplier, I had no idea what the "foam disc" was so im learning. There's not much on it as far as any readings go... anyway,, I did remove it and your method worked amazing ! Thank you from Michigan !
