This was an excellent video - and very helpful to my son and I this past weekend when we had to change out a broken shifter bezel. Only input that I would have - I could not get the larger knob off (common problem). I am 50+, and an accountant.. -so simply do not have the strength to pull it off - regardless of the position that I took in the vehicle. In the end, we used leverage - by taking two 8 foot 2X2 boards off the scrap pile, and nailing a short 2X4 block in the middle. We wedged it around the base of the knob. I placed some blocks on the drivers side (the seats have too much give) and he pulled up on other side (out through the passenger side door). I jiggled the top of the knob as he increased pressure - and voila - it popped off!! Again - great video Jeff and much appreciated!!

I just removed the shift knob from my 2002 Grand Cherokee in a surprisingly easy way. After removing the center console: 1) Cut a notch in the end of a 2x4 slightly larger than the neck of the shift knob. Shift to "Drive" so the knob points straight up, then use the forked lever you just made against a fulcrum of scrap lumber, and the knob will pop right off. It's a good idea to protect the knob with some padding like an old cleaning rag. 2) Instead of cutting wires, remove the contacts from the plug. Disconnect the plug, then use a small flat tip screwdriver to gently pry up a small rectangular piece on the outside of the plug (some sort of locking gizmo) about a millimeter or two. Meanwhile, with an even smaller flat tip, push back the locking tab inside the plug socket and gently tug the wire. The wire and contact should slide right out, intact and ready to be reinserted later.

Don't replace with another used Jeep part. I bought a green led light strip the same length as the original piece, wired it up and attached with 3m double sided tape. Not the Amazon chinese counterfeit stuff. Works beautifully and bright. Has lasted for years.

I changed out the shifter when I swapped transfer cases on my 04 from the Quadra Drive to the Select Trac, when I pulled the console I found a couple of roaches in there and one unlit fat joint. Glad I found them and not the fuzz dogs.. ( I just bought this recently)

What does the wire do? I would like to know so I can make a custom shift work. Is it just the over drive?

Thank you can I do this with an 04. Was a U Pull it today glad I waited to do it as I didn't know I was missing a light. Another thing to add to my list. Seems like there should be a way to remove that wire. Maybe the shaft can be unscrewed. As a lady I hope I have the strength to pull the shifters. Thank you so much I want to replace my radio too.
@88MustangGT4 жыл бұрын
Hi RL Chick: I think the 99 thru 04 cherokee's are similar - pull that part from you-pull & pay, LKQ, ect. and give it a try!
@rlchick57744 жыл бұрын
@@88MustangGT Found that you don't have to clip the wire. In the white connector the red wires can be removed by pushing on a small clip with something the size of a fork prong.
@88MustangGT4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you are making good progress working on your Grand Cherokee - changing out the radio is not to difficult & units can still be found at "you pull & pay or LKQ."

doing the hard way , you can use a towel hammer. to beat to one side then the other must be in 4low then beat upwards from down the pedals off it goes , or using pliers and a small pry bar like other videos or a wrench as a pry bar,, the gear shifter also can be taken off that way or taking out button cover n button with a small screw driver bottom first,cutting wire for over drive with razor blade by prying on line of vinyl first , then pry out top first then bottom using vise cribs , is the easy fast way without taking out the middle bezel etc console a rest area
@88MustangGT2 жыл бұрын
Saw others using wrench and pry bar method after I made this video. Much easier doing it that way. Live and learn!

Wow. Great video. Thanks for posting. I realize it's doable, but it still seems like a lot of work just to get the PRND12 lit again. It's a "nice to have", not a "need to have". So much simpler on other Jeep models, from what I've seen. To have to tear out the entire middle assembly just to replace a light seems extreme. I love my 2004 JGC. With 170K on the odometer and everything running well, I'm dealing with a lot of these ticky tack issues now. I also need to replace a PC74 behind my climate control. Since you've already done this gear shift strip once, and we're obviously related (Palmer), what say you drive up to Michigan and take care of this for me? Ha ha.
