I did my San Martin bronze diver a few days ago with lemon juice and an old worn out toothbrush. Along with the buckle I let it soak for about an hour, using the brush a couple of times very lightly. It came out as new, perfect. I turned the bezel two turns during the process, and then rinsed it with cool water, also turning the bezel while rinsing. Then I dried it with an old kitchen towel, put it back together and put it on. Beautiful watch.

Thanks for this genius hack.I used an electric sonicare brush.After cleaning up my captain willard bronze looks better than new.Actually it looks more like rose gold than bronze.Greetings from Germany.

I did this 2 days ago. My beliefs are, if it is food grade, it is safe for the watch and gaskets. Works instantly when my bronze watch has contact with the ketchup. Highly recommended! PS: I used the ketchup packet sauces that comes with fast foods. 😂

Very helpful video, thank you. For a bronze watch with satin brushed finish, after brushing the watch with toothbrush and toothpaste, can it remove or scratch the brushed finish?

Can a bronze watch fade or lose bronze look like plated gold watches ? Not talking about patina. Will the bronze be bronze forever? Don’t like patina look, hesitant to buy bronze watch.
@MattSeesGray
@MattSeesGray 10 ай бұрын
Bronze watches are usually an alloy made with 8% tin, but the whole watch case is made with that alloy. The bronze color will not “fade” like a gold plating. Plating is a few microns of gold on top of stainless steel, which is why plating can be removed and you can see the color of the stainless steel base. CuSn8 bronze watches are a solid alloy, so there isn’t coating that will rub off to where you can see the “base”. All that said, polishing, cleaning, removing patina, refinishing, etc… all these things can ruin the original watch finish. The brushed areas won’t be as crisp and the lines won’t be fine. And the high polished surfaces might be hazy. So basically, clean and polish you watch with care if you’re going to try to refinish it yourself. Or otherwise, learn to appreciate the patina and how it changes with you over time.

I don't think using a toothbrush is a good idea as it may develop micro scratches on smooth metal and over time after repetitive cleaning it would ruin the shine of metal. Perhaps using a microfiber cloth would be the best way to go about it without damaging the smoothness of the metal surface.

You wrong mate .... the only thing that can scratch a alloy like bronze\brass is that you will use a material that is Compressed more than the existing material .... such as ceramic, stone, a piece of bronze or iron\metal .... Im sure u get my point and if not you can tell this to Christopher Ward ,My method is based on their method :) There is more that i can expand on this subject but i think its enough :) Cheers mate !

@@WizardWatch What you are saying makes sense, but how do you explain dripping water eroding a stone!? Water is softer than a stone, so how does that work. I know it will take a very long time, but still, water is softer and will erode the stone. Thanks.
@HughR3GO
@HughR3GO Жыл бұрын
@@fc1133 There's 2 reasons why water can erode something that is seemingly harder like a stone. 1) It's not the water that's eroding or making an impression on the rock. It's the small sediment like grit or much smaller pieces of rocks and dirt suspended in moving water that is harder than the stone that does the eroding. 2) Chemical dissolution via carbonate ion captured by rainwater during its formation in the cloud. Carbonate ions can mix with the groundwater when volcanic gases gush through it via underground fractures. The carbonate ions makes water acidic and the ions from the water attracts and pulls ions from the rock material to neutralize it. Hence the rock became “eaten away” by the acidic water.

@@HughR3GO Damn, I learned something new today. Thanks for the detailed explanation. BTW, I edited my post. I exchanged corroding to eroding. : )

It's not so much the toothbrush as the abrasive quality of toothpaste. Make sure you don't buy a super abrasive type. People with sensitive teeth use a paste with less abrasiveness. Also, never use a microfiber cloth, use a regular cotton cloth, no bleach, no colour. ,

its a and acid, not very harmful, but still acid, it takes away rust, is like a DIY chemical removal, be aware that you have to neutralize it afterwards
