Mesh doesn’t work for seams, it will fail at some point. Always use paper in my opinion. Best to remove enough from the seam so that tape is recessed to be on the same plane. Make mud a bit more moist and embed the tape pressing with the knife to squeeze mud from under it. You will never have problem unless there is earthquake.

Really short sweet and to the point!!! Thank you!!! I’m beautifying my garage that has peeling drywall tape, I think I’ll go the mesh tape route. Looks way less intimidating and faster for corners and the ability to embed that inside of the old joint.

Paper tape is superior to mesh tape. It's harder to work with because it's not self adhesive this video is good demonstration for mesh tape.

You have to use powder mix, like durabond 45 for mesh tape.

Good tip!
@gageirwin72062 жыл бұрын
why not all purpose pre green lable
@theholeminute2 жыл бұрын
Because it is much weaker than a setting compound. Take a ft of mesh tape and bed it on a piece of scrap with all purpose mud, and then another with powder mix. And then try to remove the tape when they're dry.

I have this problem in my room corners. After I sand and prime I wonder if I can just paint the repair area or do I need to repaint the whole room again? Thanks
@Homemaintenancesolution2 жыл бұрын
If you have piant left for that room, then touch up should work fine. If not, it can be tough to paint a patch without it showing, even if you have the paint code. Sometimes it will work getting paint made from the code, though. It's worth a try!

Add more screws also delute wood glue and mix with 45 minutes dry compound and then you apply the same like the video
@mikemerheb70386 ай бұрын
You should also put mud down first, then tape and run your knife down go get excess mud out. Use quickset. If you put tape down first your basically just mudding in the mesh holes...

just did this in my garage, used fiber fuse and hot mud 45, then went over it all with a skim coat of all purpose. My entire garage every tape joint was loose and hanging.

It was loose and hanging after your repairs? Or prior to doing the repairs?

I did my own taping and mudding probably 30+ years ago. Over the years, and especially in a room that stays close to 80 degrees in the winter due to a woodburning stove, several taped areas are coming apart. I am trying to talk myself into doing what you did in your video, to repair them. I think these bad joints might be due to my inexperience 30 years ago, and /or the high temperatures created by the stove. Is it best to wait and do the repairs when stove and room temperatures are a little cooler? Might those high temperatures adversely effect the proper drying of the mud? Do I need to do any preparation to the existing painted surfaces first, like lightly sanding, or scuffing up the shiny finish of the paint, in order to help the mud to adhere better? Thanks
@Homemaintenancesolution Жыл бұрын
The warm temps should be a plus for you. Thoroughly drying in-between coats is very helpful. Just make sure you are taping with the right kind of mud. If you have flat paint, you won't have a bonding problem, but if it has a sheen, then sanding would help. You will experience some air bubbles when you go over the paint, but you can fill those after it dries.

I have a textured ceiling and came loose at wall seam. Any suggestions? Was thinking maybe an adhesive then paint over
@Homemaintenancesolution9 ай бұрын
You could try that. If you can get an even application of adhesive. Typically, it would be cut out and re-taped, but that might be getting into more work than you are wanting there.
@robertmccreary47499 ай бұрын
@@Homemaintenancesolution it's not the work. I don't think the texturing will match.
@Homemaintenancesolution9 ай бұрын
@@robertmccreary4749 I understand that. There's always a way to get it to match, but it probably isn't worth going through all that. I like to idea of trying to get some glue behind there and see if that works. 👍

I have another question. I have started to clean up all my old joints. After removing the areas that were cracked, and the exposed tape that was not adequately covered, I find that all the joints between the edges of the boards seem to be already filled with old mud. Do I need to put more tape over these areas, or can I simply start to add thin layers of new mud, directly over the old dry mud, and feather it out? Should I be able to fill and hide those old areas without the addition of more tape? Should those cracks permanently disappear, and stay invisible without new tape being applied? thanks
@Homemaintenancesolution Жыл бұрын
I'm not clear what you have at this point, but if the tape is still there and tight, then don't add more tape. If the tape is loose then you need to get it off and retape.

If the tape is showing, but not loose, then it may just need a top coat of light weight drywall mud. Is the area you a referring to in garage perhaps?

Thanks for this video. Obviously the builder at my home didn’t do a very good job. Should you v groove the but joint? This will improve adhesion don’t you think.
@Homemaintenancesolution2 жыл бұрын
All your adhesion is on the flat surface of the drywall. I don't think it would help, but I don't think it will hurt as long as the v groove is small.

Partly because taping is done quickly and under poor weather conditions, but also because garages go through heavy temperature and humidity swings.

Would you do the same thing for a corner on a wall? I am about to paint my bathroom and I noticed there’s a little bump out from my shower on the the corner of that wall where the paint is chipped and peeling(the reason for repainting) I noticed what looks to be a straight line, like the drywall tape on the corner, should I do what you did in this video? Or cut it out and just put some compound down and sand it? Or just work around it?

Well, it's not the type of tape that causes the problem. If you redo it, try using Durabond mud. It is the strongest that I know of. The benefit of the mesh tape is that it grabs better.
