In this video we will show you how to troubleshoot any no power issue on any Fix for GM gauge cluster 03 Silverado PNRD123 light GMC Chevy Pontiac Saturn Oldsmobile Cadillac down to a component level and how to reduce the chances of this problem coming back anytime soon. This is how I fixed my gauge cluster in my 2003 Silverado. It was having intermittent power cut out and the shift indicator light was fading and cutting out.

You're the exact guy I need to talk to. I saw people on KZbin adding LED lights to their instrument cluster. Mine work just fine before I did what I'm about to tell you. Long story short I put 120 volt LED Christmas lights in my instrument cluster. As soon as I plugged it in all the lights blew. After that all gauges stopped working my PRNDL does not work or my odometer my blinkers work fine and my engine light has no trouble coming on. I went through and I checked the grounds I even read them with a larger gauge wire because I'm running a power inverter. I checked every fuse possible. I'm pretty sure I re soldered every joint however there was one little resistor that was floating around inside I think I saw it in the right way as well as in the right spot. I'd be more than happy to email you photos of of the board side of my cluster if you think you can figure it out. Because I'm all about doing my own work on my vehicle

Telling people to just use random resistors is careless and comes across as unprofessional. The correct 24 ohm replacement SMD resistors can be purchased for pennies at component supply retailers like mouser, digi-key or Newark.

I seriously hope no one actually takes this guy seriously. But then again, maybe this is the video everyone watches right before they screw their cluster up and send it to us. Proprietary 24 ohm SMD resistors....LMAO!

need to use FLUX man .a smaller tip on the old solder iron would also be a good Idea Using a 1/4 watt resistor is a bit too much as well. If you look around at other broken electronic stuff you can find SMD parts you can strip off I have a box full of boards I pull SMD from

The two watt metal oxide resistor he used looks like 22 ohms instead of 24, will this make a difference? Why chance it when if you don't have the correct 24 ohm resistor you can parallel two 47 ohm resistors which effectively gives you 23.5 which is closer. If you are like me you may even measure all your 5% resistors and find two that are on the high side of the tolerance and I bet you can get 24 ohms. This is in a pinch if you don't want to wait to order the SMD parts from the proper place. Another thing I noticed, (I'm not sure if I was understanding him correctly) was he said two were in parallel and he replaced both with just one? In this case you would want half the resistance if the two 24 in were in | | and use a 12 ohm instead. 1/((1/R1)+(1/R2)+(1/R3)...) to figure out parallel resistance. Again any number of resistors in parallel can get you exactly 12 ohms if you don't have a 12 ohm resistor on hand.

Im working on a 2005 chevy 1500 cluster (changing back lighting) and for some odd reason, I lost power to all gauges as well as PRNDL and the message board. Its like im missing a main input somewhere. Any ideas on where to hunt?

This video is incorrect on so many levels; the advice/guidance rendered in this video worked, only because a resistor was open, and soldered connections from the manufacturer contained one, or more "cold joints"/incomplete connections, a fairly common malady due to the 'RoHS compliant no-lead solder, and no-clean flux' used when the board was 'flowed' . "These" connections become intermittent with both temperature changes ("thermally" intermittent), or movement, ("mechanically" intermittent). He got "lucky", period.

+Zac Burns I you get the printed circuit board out, get an powered eye piece like a strong magnifying glass. Now look for discolored soldered joint, cold soldered or broken connections where there is a visible ring around it. The "SMD" is short for "Surface mount Device" that by law, the use of lead in solder is reduced, but flux for cleaning & help remove oxidation, they actually use "Hot Air" tools that are precise & expensive to attach these components. Part numbers on each can be researched online by "Datasheet" that will show different manufactures, white paper drawing of part, size, component name, electrical information, including the time & temp these can be exposed to over time of soldering, as to not cause damage to the parts. Looking is the first step as I used the lease of an old projector for years, but Drs. used them and jewelers do as well. They can range from $20 - $2k. ASE Master Tech since 1978 / Retired

The best you can do, is to understand how to use a good digital multimeter and become comfortable with how to use it and know what you are seeing. If you are good with a DMM, start with a visual inspection, then check power and ground on the vehicle side & fuses. Look for aftermarket devices installed on the IPC circuit. Now start on the IPC printed circuit board components, DMM and “TEE” pins from fabric stores. Use these to isolate each resistor, capacitors for correct value & point of attachment. Look for loose solder joints due to heat, cold soldered joints on each part & both sides of board. There are excellent videos that show how to check “SMD’s” while on the pcb. Follow the copper circuit lines where they exit under the green varnish type coating as they too can be fixed if damaged by soldering a wire across them. Don’t forget the cross front to rear with solder thru holes to complete a circuit as well. There are ID charts online to help you know the part as well as some printed circuit boards have symbols or words silk-screened on them to help ID parts or diode direction. Hope this helps as learning electronics for me started 40 years ago with a book then doing it. Also spare parts can be had for cheap by getting the same year/model IPC from a local bone yard. Best of luck.

RED is B+, PNK is key hot and BLK and BLK/WHT can both be grounds. These are tiny pins so using “TEE” pins from a fabric store will help connect but do NOT spread female terminals. Give me year, make and model as I have schematics up to 2004. Many newer models have same wires as these have 1 wire for class2 serial data while the PCM supplies ground for check engine light also.
