Hmm- Thanks for this guide, but as a maintenance op myself, I would like to point out SAFETY is everything when working with MAINS electricity. What presenter calls "the MCB board" is known as the "Consumer Unit" (in the UK) (Or what used to be called the "Fusebox"). Unless the trip switches are CLEARLY marked, you might find yourself working with a LIVE connection. Personally, I would cut the MAINS power to the entire house (in case the bathroom trip switch is incorrectly labelled at the Consumer Unit). Then, I would TEST the two hanging WIRES with a DIGITAL MULTIMETER (in the UK u can get these for as little as £8 from Halfords). Once you are SURE you dont have 240 volts pumping through those hanging wires, then I would unscrew them. Best wishes- Happy DIYing! (PS If you not sure how to cut power on the Consumer Unit correctly, Google is your friend!)

Thanks Bert....This was the first attempt at anything apart from changing plugs & fuses. Clear, encouraging advice & easily achieved despite not having all your tools. The new switch matched the size of the old one, so rather than disturb the base fixings on the ceiling, I just rewired into the new part and screwed it back into the old base. Main fuse back on, pull cord, lights on. Great. Tried again, to show how clever I was, and the whole unit came out of the ceiling fixings! Light still works, but now I need another youtube video on small ceiling plaster repairs! Keep smiling - it cheers me up.

This video was great. I have no previous experience of doing DIY but now have to learn as recently divorced. You/he is obviously not English but explained and showed everything precisely and really easy to understand. Thank you - I went out and bought a light switch, did everything you said - except had to get the pliers to straighten out the wire- and both my wires were brown- but you covered that - excellent- thank you very much for saving me money on an electrician.

Nice straightforward instructions. Also, you showed the wiring within the switch by turning it towards the camera. I saw someone else's video and they didn't do that - probably the most important part!

you saved me some major embarrassment, and probably my life. I looked at the new switch i got, and was thinking the common was for the earth wire, but then said to myself, "let me go have a double check on youtube, and yours was the first to come up, and was all i needed, so much thanks, i got the wires right ue to you, and the mrs is happy.

Thank you for this - it's given me confidence to have a go fixing the light in the bathroom - I wasn't sure I could because the base is difficult to unscrew and I didn't have the muscle to dislodge it, but it looks like I can just replace the base part and not need to worry about the order of the wires either... I will give it a try! Thank you. :)

My advice is to turn all of the electricity off from the switch board as sometimes they have been labelled wrong (unless you know for certain), and just use the daylight to or a torch to fix it. But is always safer to cut all the mains off just in case there is some short circuiting, water conduction somewhere or something like that.

I think you should always use a circuit testing screwdriver to ensure the switch is not live Unless you have previously seen the light go off when that fuse is tripped you cannot rely on it being "dead" If you do then it may be you that's dead

My rope snapped at the top so I purchased a new fitting when I took the old off fitting all the wires were red not the usual blue, brown and green. I thought I had memorised where to screw them into the new fitting..put it all together and then turned on the electric by the mains and pulled the bathroom cord. I was relieved and happy that the light had came on. When I was going to put my daughter to bed I realized that her bedroom light, our bedroom and the landing is not work. I read that that it was something to do with a loop the lights are on but kind of confused me. My question is it's dark upstairs now and I've had to leave the bathroom light on for light and especially if my kids need the bathroom during the night because all the other lights now don't work. Will me leaving it on as it's been on for two hours cause a fire or Dangerous? I'm so paranoid now but it's to dark to do anything about it now. Can anyone please advise me.

This is potentially dangerous. The safety steps have not been sufficiently covered. If you are not 100% certain of the process call a competent person or do more research. Electricity doesn't know you and it will kill you if you are not fully aware. I know this is an old video but it came up top of my current search. Presenters should be responsible to ensure their content is up to date and current but above all safe.
