some inputs: 1) we can check the electronic choke with a 100 w bulb serially . for that, you should short both side out put wire each other and connect a 100 w bulb serially. if the bulb glows faint , that means choke is good if it glow bright means something still short on the board. it is always safe than it connect parallel to live line 2) some choke has polyester cap instead of electrolytic so it is necessary to check the value of poly cap with cap meter . 3) you told inductance using for oscillating it to ac which is not correct fully . Electronic ballast takes supply at 50 - 60 Hz. It first converts AC voltage into DC voltage. After that, filtration of this DC voltage is done by using capacitor configuration. Now filtered DC voltage is fed to the high frequency oscillation stage where oscillation is typically square wave and frequency range is from 20 kHz to 80 kHz. Hence output current is with very high frequency. A small amount of inductance is provided to be associated with high rate of change of current on high frequency to generate high valued L * di/dt . Generally more than 400 V is required to strike the gas discharge process in fluorescent tube light. When switch is ON, initial voltage across the lamp becomes 1000 V around due to high valued L * di/dt , hence gas discharge takes place instantaneously. Once the discharge process is started, the voltage across lamp is decreased below 230V up to 125V and then this electronic ballast allows limited current to flow through this lamp. This control of voltage and current is done by control unit of the electronic ballast. In running condition of fluorescent lamp electronic ballast acts as a dimmer to limit current and voltage. 4)In some cases i have seen some resisters of value 475 k has faulty 5)Now a days somechokes like CG and philips are making SMT componant chokes 6)some times inductance insulation also got damaged due to faulty transistor. for that, an inductance meter need to check the value of that 7) we can extend the length of life time of fluorescent tube once it got fused with a simple trick . trace the broken filament side with a multi-meter just connect 10 ohm resistance across the broken filament pins and connect it back and switch on . it will last up to the last argon gas . good explanation keep it up

thanks for such a nice explanation ,please help me with my query , output of the ballast gives VDC 1000V initially ?actually after being observing the circuit closely i found there is a polyester capacitor between center the 2 outputs of the four . and it is coded as 622K 3A and this value is not available in my home town .and this have been shorted.

The old cfl ballasts are easy to fix since they dont have smd components But the newer ones have smd and it's insanely difficult to fix
