What if you do not know the original color that was used? How do you match it then?

Remove the solvent-based wax first with paint thinner and a clean cotton rag. Repair and re-wax.

how do I get the closest match for venetian plaster? I am renting a house and the wall has the same plaster, I would get at least the 1980's and I want to fix some of the parts that have pealed off or where holes were made. Is there any way to properly match?

Hi there, if you think the Venetian Plaster was applied in the 1980’s then it is probably a lime-based Venetian Plaster and not an acrylic Venetian Plaster, which is what we sell. If this is the case, it would be best to attempt a patch with a lime-based plaster. As far as matching the color goes, that’s going to be a bit tricky because the tones of a Venetian Plaster are developed over layers. The best approach might be to try to match the color by mixing small amounts of paint until you find something that seems close, and then take that dried paint swatch to your local Paint & Decorating store for them to attempt to match with a plaster by scanning your swatch. The store could also provide advice about lime-based plasters. We hope this helps.

i have a 108year old house with Venetian plaster. Some cracks have appeared. And in one place there is some missing and around that area, some is loose but has not fallen off. Is there a way to 'restick' the parts that are loose? What can I use? We are in Portugal. Can you tell me what the plaster might be made from? I suspect it was quicklime. If there is someone you could refer me to regarding antique venetian plaster techniques I would be grateful. Also, what primer are you using?

Thanks for your question. The GPW Venetian Plaster product is acrylic-based, so it would not be appropriate for your situation. Given the age your house, it is likely that your Venetian Plaster application was done with a traditional lime-based as you suspected. Your best bet would be to speak with someone more familiar with these traditional products. Here’s a couple links that might be helpful to you: Vasari is a brand of lime-based plasters and they also have some videos: vasariplaster.com/pages/videos and here is a plaster service in Portugal: www.renobuild.pt/en/renobuild-algarve/ I hope this is helpful.
