This amp was shipped to D-Lab to investigate/repair strange noises coming from the amplifier. Problem turned out to be a bad 6L6 and 6C5 tube. The 6L6 appeared to have an internal short. The 6C5 tube is notorious for microphonics. It is sometime difficult to locate quiet ones. I would recommend you stock up on a sleeve to keep your Gibson playing quiet. Remember use caution with metal jacket tubes. If wired incorrectly they can become shock hazards.

The "EH" in the model name stands for Electric Hawaiian. These amps were designed for Hawaiian lap guitars such as the "frying pan" from back in the day. Guitar pickup technology has changed a lot since then.

I got a 1963 Gibson falcon 14watt, I redid all the caps and changed the EQ Abit, It sounds better then fenders I've worked on, the reverb is so sweet, I love it

Great classic amps. I don't think I've ever had a Gibson EH series amp come in for repair that didn't sound like rice krispies at some point. They're easy fixes, and sound great. I truly don't trust the metal 6L6's. I've gotten knocked on my split peach a few times with them. I replace them with the glass one's myself. Great video as always. Keep 'em coming :)

Always learn something in every one of your videos! Enjoyed this one. Good to know that the metal case is attached to pin 1 on those 6L6's...can be a good thing, but also could be a disaster waiting to happen (if you happen to touch it and there is high voltage on it for some reason.) as well. Say HI to Marsha! Where was your glass of wine? Hey, did you ever try the Morse Code wine? I hope you guys had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

The 6C5 tube was inherently noisy and microphonic due to a poor design. The 6J5 was developed as a direct replacement with an improved design.

Thanks, D-Lab. Always love the videos. How did you get into guitar amps when you don’t play guitar?

Another great video Terry! Although not enough wine. I have a question do you think it is possible that this amp requires steel bottle tubes because of the close proximity to the magnet in the speaker? It seems to me that could be a real issue. Please let me know.Thanx

IDK why but i loved that you don't play guitar LOL. If you don't play but are going to be using a guitar to test amps in your videos; might i suggest you try tuning your guitar to an open tuning such as open D or open G. that way when you play the strings open, it actually plays a chord (well technically you are playing an Em7add4 when you play your guitar open like that, but it's not a great chord LOL) you could also then bar one finger over all the strings, and move it up and down the neck to play different chords. just a thought.

I believe when that amp was made, the electric guitars used cobalt pickups for more gain.

How did you remove the metal-cased tube without shocking yourself? Did you just drain the filter caps?

Just tune the guitar to open G. Only need one finger to play a song!
