Thanks for the video. It helped me prepare for what I needed to do. I changed my Transfer Case Motor on my 2002 Trailblazer LT this weekend. Mine was in 2Hi to start with, removed 4 bolts, released the plug and out it was. The Dorman # 600-903 (7 pin rectangular plug) was set for 2Hi from the factory, bolted it in, snapped the plug back together and was done in less than 20 minutes.

You may want to check the front axles to see if they have play in them, or if they're possibly worn.

My truck was in 4lo and when I went to shift to 2hi, the N light on the brand new selector switch came on and my truck hasn't moved since, theres a grinding noise coming from the TC and when I try to put it in park while the truck is running I feel gear grind. I ordered a new shift motor from you guys and hope that's all it is but how do i know when I've manually shifted the gearbox into 2hi?

You could check the fuses and make sure that the shift motor has power going to it.

It's hard to say without being able to look at the vehicle. It could be a bad sensor, such as the EGR valve or IAC, or maybe something as simple as a tune-up if it's been some time since the vehicle has had one. Hope this helps you out.

If you have a check engine, or any kind of warning lights on in the dash, you may want to have the code pulled to see what it's pointing to.

Unfortunately there are a few different things that it could be. The best bet would be to bring the vehicle into the mechanic and they should be able to determine it. It could range from the shift motor to the transfer case shift fork to the entire transfer case not working correctly.

Although on the Trailblazer/Envoy/Rainier the motor hardly never fails the most common problem is the TCCM (transfer case control module)

If the system happens to run on vacuum at all, you may want to check the engine bay to see if there are any frayed or broken vacuum lines.

You may want to check all of the u-joints to make sure that they can turn freely and that none of them are bound up.

I know this is an older video, but extremely useful. I have a question. I've replaced this twice now, about to be a third time in five years. Granted, the first two were due to the stock motor dying and its replacement being defective. So the replacement either died or the transfercase is somehow stuck in 4x4. As you can imagine, this isn't great for the 4x4, tires, or my gas mileage. I'm swapping out a warranty replacement motor, but wondered if you had any advice on ways to check the transfer case? When the motor worked, it would transition across all modes from 2x4 to 4x4H to 4x4L and back, anytime prior. I used to keep the control on Auto as I live in Missouri and you never know when that freezing rain only is actually going to turn in to black ice. While 4x4 doesn't keep you safe from it, the combination of stability control, traction control, and 4x4 has saved an impending sideways slide off the road, so it can be useful. But, I'm concerned about going through these motors. Two is a bit much since 2019.

@matthew1986ful You may want to check your hubs, 4WD actuator and also the vacuum lines under the hood to see if you're loosing vacuum anywhere in the system.

If you have an issue, maybe you could try to disconnect the battery to see if it helps to clear the computer codes.

Hi, thanks for the video. I have a problem and can't seem to find it. My 2002 TB I6 4x4, while driving in 2HI, it'll go like into ( feel like neutral ) although still in gear. I have to stop then and adjust the switch to A4WD before she'll will move again. Then she'll drive fine again, but as soon as I switch her to 2HI, a while after, the same happens again. The oil level is correct... I also found that when I switch the transfer case to Neutral, I can still move her when I select D or R... Could the problem be the shift motor? Would appreciate the help.

You may be able to hear it enguage, you could also test the power going to it too, to see if it's a power issue.

@bobbyv125 Currently we do not have a video on this repair. After doing some research on this topic, the TCCM for an 02 Chevy Trailblazer, should be located behind the dash, near the headlight switch. Hope this helps out.

Be careful torquing the bolts to 30 foot pounds I installed one last night in my 03 envoy and one of the bolts pulled the threads right out of the transfer case easy fix with a slightly bigger Bolt and a tap but after doing further research I'm pretty sure that the proper torque spec for the four bolts holding motor in is 15flbs not 30flbs

Hay 1A auto i just replaced mine watched your video and it was helpful. Is it really 200ft pounds. Seems like to much for aluminum housing. I didn't want to break a bolt or strip it so I used a 14" 3/8 ratchet. And just made them about as tight as they were when I removed them.

@1AAuto on my 2002 trailblazer, can you tell me if a faulty transfer case shift motor would trigger a no start no crank from the pcm? When turning the key, the only click sound comes from the wiring at that junction where wiring feeds into the shift motor. I've eliminated the starter relay, ignition switch, battery. It just killed while in idle. I was checking the neutral safety switch location but the clicking from turning the key was at the shift motor. Thanks in advance

It seems like the gears lining up is a common issue. There is a larger keyway tooth that acts as a pilot, but even when lined up does not fix the issue. Any extra advice on that? Maybe a way to shift the transfer case into a gear that allows the motor input to line up with the transfer case shaft properly?

You should be okay with replacing it. I'm not sure why you would need to reprogram the computer. You could also join an automotive forum for your vehicle to get a second opinion to see if this is the case, you should be okay with replacing it. It's just an electric part that plugs into a harness.

I have a 2004 Buick Rainier. Just started having issues in sharp turns - both in drive and in reverse. Was told it was either the transfer case motor or new tires. THe tires are two years old but only 10k miles on em. Put air in the tires and it the issue was better but still starting to stall/shake in tight turns. Is the motor the issue? Also, I have no lift, tools, or any experience but pretty sure I could do this...do I have to bring it in for any programming? Thanks

Great video you guys rock! My 2006 Chevy Trailblazer would not shift from 2WD to 4WD. It remained in 2WD only. I thought the issue might be a bad transfer case motor so I replaced the transfer case motor but it did not fix the problem. I read that the issue might also be the TCCM was bad. To test the transfer case motor i unbolted it again and plugged it in. Then I turned on the car. I heard movement so I thought the motor must be good but when I went to put it back on the transmission was no longer in the same position as the transfer case motor. How do I get the transmission pin and the transfer case motor to align again? After the pin would not align I tried to move the car without the transfer case motor attached and now the car is stuck in neutral. I can shift through the gears but it is not engaging any gear. What happened?

It could be an issue with the actuator. Also check the vacuum lines under the hood in the engine compartment to see if there might be a disconnected of broken vacuum line whic could be causing this issue. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

What were the symptoms that required this repair? My 2008 Saab 9-x7 sometimes hesitates/stutters just as I am beginning to accelerate and the AWD "slippery" dash light comes on. A few seconds later the light goes off and I can accelerate normally again. Would this be a symptom of the transfer motor?

Sounds like your transfer case it getting stuck, replace the transfer case oil and it should go away

smart trak 2 transfer case oil, flush it out and put new oil in, quite an easy job just get some type of like pump to put the new oil in since you can't just "pour" new oil into the t-case

Sounds like wheel speed sensor problem. But that can affect the awd and may show that you have a problem with the encoder motor too.
