The Touareg battery is found underneath the drivers side seat. This is a very unorthodox location, and you might need some help finding it, and replacing it. In this video we show you how to remove the seat and replace the VW Touareg battery.

So - you actually made this a little harder than necessary. Once you move the seat back and lean the seatback forward to access the front bolts you should then tip it up and then slide the seat forward as far as possible. This lets you tip the seat back much further which gives you a lot more room to pull the batter out and more room to work.

It's actually easier and simpler than in this video. Absolutely no need to remove the trim from the front of the seat, no need to pull carpet from the back, and no need to be so cramped - you can easily flip the seat out of the way completely. First remove the two plastic trim pieces from the rails at the back of the seat - they just slide out. Then pop up the two trim pieces on the floor in front of the seat and remove the triple square bolts as in the video, pop up the seat - then just press the button to slide the seat forward all the way - it will allow the seat to flip back almost 90 degrees giving you plenty of space. Reclining the back rest forward will also give you some extra space.

For all the moaners: the battery isn't in the engine compartment, because there's simply no space there when a V10 or a W12 engine is fitted. Also, the Touaregs with the V10 and W12 engines have actually two batteries: one in the boot under the flooring, and the other under the seat. One of them is reserved for cranking, and the other is used to power all the other electrical consumers - this prevents the car from getting stranded because of the battery getting depleted by said consumers. Remember, that the original Touareg has serious off-road capabilities and has been designed with that use scenario in mind, hence this design. Which btw also helps lower the center of mass on the car, which is also important when off-roading. Touaregs with smaller engines and lower trim levels, like this V8, might not have the dual battery system, but have instead a spare wheel under the boot flooring - and that's why their only battery is located under the seat. Because, you know, it's obviously more important to provide easy access to the spare wheel than to the battery, if you have to choose between these two options.

If VW only made up these "excuses" after the fact, after they cobbled together the Touareg randomly from parts, then they must have had a hell of a luck, because these things just happen to make sense on so many levels, you can't even believe it. Which is not so much a surprise though if you know that the Touareg, together with the Phaeton, which it shares a platform with, were VW's no-compromise all-in vehicles at the time (even more so the Touareg, which had even less size constraints), where engineers pretty much didn't have to cut any corners, but could put everything in the cars they thought would be good, and at places where they'd think they'd fit best.

You are almost due. Also, it doesn't negate the bad design elements. Or the fact that all of those plastics under the seat are as sturdy as a baby's tooth. Sometimes edges, or clips break. Now all that stuff is a floppy, rattley mess under your seat. A needless expense. Especially when you realize they could have mounted that battery anywhere else.

@@512TXSDIYIt total BS. Do you know how hot a vehicle's interior gets? Triple digit temps. Hot enough to kill a human if left locked inside. The battery sees more extreme temps where it's at under the seat than the engine compartment. At least in the engine compartment you have air flowing through it. When the Touareg released, it was VW first ever SUV. They learned a lot of lessons with that first generation, which they applied to the newer generations. That's why the battery is no longer under the seat. 😉 It's not under the seat in the Tiguan, nor the Taos, nor in the new Atlas which is the successor to the Touareg. It was a bad design choice. Let's call a spade a spade.

Did you know if you move the seat all the way forward you can tilt the whole thing back further and have less hassle at getting to the battery. Not only that you could have saved the settings on pretty much all Touareg models and just its 123 buttons on the door. it would have put the seat and steering wheel back into the right position when you were done. Because all of us can see you have the seat fully back on the tracks and that's why you had a hard time pulling the battery out.

Anyone who doesn't know why should obviously not work on cars as a mechanic, because they're endangering people's life on an everyday basis. And it's not the dealership that wants you to replace them anyway, but it's the official repair manual that advises to do so. The manual that have been written by engineers that spent more years learning the basics of physics and automotive engineering than most mechanics spent in school all together. And who are not advising you to replace every single bolt every single time, but only those and only then, when it's necessary, because for ex. of safety reasons. Also, the real question should be: why not change it, even then if it seems superfluous to some, if it's a $10 item, which is negligible compared not only to the safety benefits, but also to the cost of the battery replacement, which including material and labor will well run into several hundreds anyway? It just makes no sense trying to save pennies on that. And only people with no understanding of even the basics of material design, engineering and road safety in general do not realize that.

Gábor Bérczi ok keyboard technician. Spare me your lackadaisical nonsense. Tell a customer you have to charge an extra 8 bucks to replace the seat screws because they are not "reusable". Oh btw, they are rarely ever in stock at the local dealership. Meaning the customer has to wait for them to arrive to finish their battery R&R. See what kind of response you get from that custkmer. When most customers do not even want to fork out the money for a proper OEM battery. Most show up with some Walmart, or refurbished nonsense. Plus they want it done yesterday. Also, I've changed a gazillion batteries on these rigs throughout my 7 year tenure at VW, and now that I run an independent repair shop. Never once have I lost a customer due to the seat screws failing. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I swear folks today are dillusional. That is why society is where it is at. Nobody has common sense anymore.

I had Passat W8 and loved to drive it. Gas mileage was not that great, especially only having 270 some horsepower. At 55k miles, the coils sitting on all 8 sparkplugs started to go out. Then the the engine mounts went out. Next was the alternator which is oil cooled and expensive. The headlight bulbs needed replaced and to do that, the bumper cover has to come off. The final straw was the 5speed auto was needing rebuilt. I miss how it handles but it is expensive to own.

You need to slide the seat FORWARD not Backwards. Also remove rear rail cover FIRST. Very important!. Or you will break them. then the bottom of seat will go up and past steering wheel. You can remove the battery staright up In less 30 seconds then!

You missed the whole secret to accessing the battery... after you lay the seat back, move it all way forward on the slide, the seat will then lay back and you can access everything even the screw you removed from the back, and the battery pulls nearly straight up

Getting the battery in and out is not this difficult! Power the seat back just far enough to clear the steering wheel when tilting the seat back, with the front of the seat past the steering wheel power the seat forward (up at this point) all the way. With the seat back de-clined all the way forward there is lots of room to get the battery in and out.

Does the VW not require registering the battery serial number in the ecu? My Audi S4 seems to require more ecu manipulation for battery swap.
@berczigabor
@berczigabor 5 жыл бұрын
It's not the serial you've to "register" (code), but the type of the battery, so the charge control unit knows at what voltage and intervals to charge the battery to maximize its lifetime. And no, such old Touaregs usually do not have a battery control module, so, you not only do not have to, but can't even possibly code your new battery in them.
@LynxStarAuto

Your Audi uses what is called an IBS cable. This stands for intelligent battery sensor. This system monitors your battery's state of charge and state of health. As the battery ages, or as it's state of charge depletes, the charging system adjusts accordingly. Also, if it was to detect a parasitic draw, the system would send power down commands to the respective modules, so that the battery may be preserved for cranking. This is usually why you will get a "consumers shut down" message when you first start the vehicle after it has been sitting for a while. It can also recommend battery replacement due to age, and energy diagnosis. Anyway, on these systems one must reset the battery montitors whenever you replace the battery. That way the system can properly maintain the battery. Think of it like an oil service reset. This is essentially what "registering" the battery means. It is simply a battery system reset. BMW was the one to use the circumlocutory definition and designation for the process which has led to a ton of misinformation online. First gen Teggys only used a battery module on the V10 models here Stateside. That system did not require resetting when replacement was necessary. Late second gens started to use the same IBS cable as most late model vehicles. On that one, a new battery replacement is recorded.
