How to replace a capacitor on an air conditioner / AC and blower motor in furnace. I go over how to replace the dual run capacitor in the condenser unit step by step, explaining how and why in the process. I also replace the capacitor in the furnace for the blower motor. I show how I adjust the bracket/strap to fit any size capacitor and how to check the capacitors with a meter. By the time you will be done with the video, you will be a capacitor wizard ;)

As an HVAC tech I would agree that $350 for a capacitor is too high. The national average is about $160 plus a dispatch fee of around $85 for a total of $245 to do that repair. However if you are going to ask me to drive 25 miles after 8 PM in the evening to look at your air conditioner I don't want to hear any complaining about the cost of the repair. We have overhead costs to cover and I don't work for minimum wage.

@@BGood496 I don't earn $70 to $100 an hour which is what lawyers earn per hour. But let me explain it further so you are not so ignorant in the future. Now about that $245 charge I spoke of in the last post. About 4 employees at the company are going to take a piece of that $245. First there is the guy who does nothing but inventory everyday to make sure all the trucks in the fleet are stocked so repairs can be done in a timely manner. He he gets paid to do that. Next there is that nice lady you talked to on the phone that booked the call and dispatched the technician to your home. She doesn't work for free. Then there is the technician who works long hours in the heat and cold weather. I expect to be paid. And lastly there is the boss who is not in business to break even. None of the above includes the cost of the part it's self and business insurance and and fuel used in the work truck to get to the homes of ungrateful ignorant boobs that don't understand the concept of overhead business costs.

Great explanation! People like you are a breath of fresh air. An HVAC company told me my blower capacitor was low on charge and suggested replacing it. They quoted me $267 to do so. The capacitor sits in a cradle outside the blower motor with two leads! I was floored at the price. I bought the same capacitor for $10. Enough said.

Thanks for your video, my AC was not turning on, after a little research I found out that the problem most likely was the capacitor, my first reaction was to call a local ac parts store, they woult not sell me one because i needed to be licensed( license to steal or to be a thief), I asked how much they would charge me to come and diagnose, they said 180 for the visit and 200 for the capacitor, the capacitor is 17 dlls on Amazon, I ended up buying one and changing it my self, I am back in business, Victory !! 17 instead of the 380 those thieves wanted to charge me !!!

I do not usually comment on youtube videos, but this helped me save a lot of money when out air went out this last week. Just the fan was working on the outside unit . The compressor stopped working. Got over 87 inside the house and our portable air conditioners didn't cut it. I used your video and went to to a local plumbing parts place and found the exact capacitor I needed. I safely discharged the old one and put new one in. At first the whole unit started up quieter and I could not tell the compressor was on. I was surprised when I put my hand on coolent line going into house and it was super cold. So thanks!! this video was the difference between getting a big bill or helping myself and not waiting a couple of days.....

After our system stopped cooling yesterday, I checked around everything I could, and eventually by listening to the neighbor's unit could tell that our compressor wasn't running even though the fan was. At last -- Of all the youtube videos -- someone finally explains that -- 1. A replacement capacitor is ok to have SMALLER dimensions than the original, as long as the MFD match and voltage equal to or are more than original voltage. AND 2. If a capacitor only has two connections and they are not marked in any way -- the connections are obviously interchangeable and can be connected either way. Thank you

Great video! 105 degrees today in Texas!! A/C unit stopped cooling. Found the compressor running but the fan not blowing. Opened the rear panel, found a dead lizard laying next to the capacitor! Assume he was electrocuted and it also fried the capacitor in the process! Your clear, concise video walked me through changing the capacitor. One thing I ran into that I have not read on this thread is that the top of the old capacitor was so rusted, that I could not read the names of each leads (TERM/FAN/C). Because of this, I did not know where the wires need to terminate on the new capacitor. I used a screwdriver to etch off some of the rust that allowed me to make out the names of each terminal. Thank you for the video, it saved us from a hot house!!

I’m so glad I just saw this! My A/C guy was just here yesterday doing their annual tune up and said that the capacitor was getting weak and he gave me a quote of around $300 to repair! Damn! All it is is a few screws and wires for $300? WTF! You know I am going to order a new one and do it myself! Thx again!!!!!

Man, thanks so much for this great video. I had a very good idea this was my issue but didn't have the confidence to go and try to fix it. Your video made me feel better and I gave it a shot. Cap was fine in my case BUTTT there were a few wires going to the compressor that were arcing for some reason. I replaced the wire and sealed it all up nice and tight. Working like a champ. Surviving the hot Florida sun for another day thanks to you. Also ordering a space cap. so I have one on hand next time it goes out. Genius suggestion really.

First rent house, first air conditioner to ever go out. I did pay an air hvac guy $150 to tell me what was wrong but then he was going to charge me an additional $400 to replace the capacitor. So here I go, I'm going to follow your amazing instructions to do it myself. We'll see how THAT goes, HAHA! Thanks!

You’re the best! The instructions could not be better. It’s July 3, 2020 at 6pm & 110 degrees in Arizona & my rental house’s air went out. With your videos I was able to troubleshoot the problem & solve it within the hour. Ace Hardware had the capacitor I needed. This saved me big $$$ & my renters are happy too. I’m happy to subscribe. Thanks again.

Thank you! I’m still at it. I had hoped I wouldn’t have to call the pros. As I mentioned my husband was killed not too long ago and not only do I have to be self sufficient, I also like to learn & challenge myself. I’m in the process of replacing my capacitor on my AC. I ordered exact part for the unit; however the capacitor that’s in my unit now has 3 connectors: C-has 4 tines- 1 tine connected to yellow wire, 1 tine connected to black wire leading to Hard Start. Therm - has 3 tines -1 tine connected to blue wire & 1 tine connected to black wire also leading to Hard Start. Fan - has 1 tine and no wires are connected to it. Also found that my AC unit has 2 extra pieces: An “A -1 component Hard Start multiplier WSX -8 A”= 2 black wires - 1 connected to C other connected to Therm on existing capacitor. After more research I found that the other piece (squarish small box starting to rust at the bottom) is a small run capacitor. My challenge is starting to overwhelm me! You guys are all awesome and I’ve learned a lot from your videos. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Btw - I purchased a tester. I just watched another video that showed you can eliminate that small start capacitor if you now have a dual capacitor. I’m not sure if I should just connect exactly as is, replace small run capacitor too or should I try to eliminate the run capacitor and how? I purchased a tester like the one you tested with. Can I check the small rusting run capacitor while it’s on the AC unit outside, all power is off, top of capacitor is all wrapped up in black tape.?
