How To Replace A Caravan Shower Vent

After a recent caravanning trip, we got home to find the dome cover on the caravan's shower vent was 'missing'....it had been torn off because someone forgot to close the hatch before we hit the road.
In this video I'll show you how to replace the entire shower vent assembly, because I couldn't track down a replacement dome hatch for my particular shower vent.
The process was fairly straightforward, although the amount of sealant that had been used between the underside of the original vent and the roof of the caravan, necessitated me using a hammer and chisel to separate the vent from the roof, resulting in a small amount of damage to the edge of the roof sheet around the hole.
When I installed the new shower vent, I used some 25mm x 48mm adhesive backed weather strip and a small amount of sealant along the edges, to ensure a water-tight seal.
Wiring up the fan switch was easy to do and I used spade connectors that I insulated with heatshink and then covered the connection with electrical tape.

The shower vent I installed came from www.transengrv...
The sealant I used was Selleys Roof and Gutter (translucent)
The weather strip I used was Moroday Handy Seal.

It's a shame you couldn't get a replacement lid, I was lucky a few years back getting a lid off eBay and had an easy fix, still you did a great job.

Thanks Kevin. There were several options on eBay that 'looked right' but I couldn't be 100% sure. At least I know what brand it is, if I lose the cover again (not that I'm planning on doing that, though)!!

A uv stable sealant is all that is needed to put the new one in. The last thing you want is water ingress and having to do the job twice.

Thanks for sharing. I have been looking at this same brand but was wondering as it looked like the cover inside did not close up against the top. Perhaps the van is 'thicker " than most. Do you know the van thickness? Cheers

Hi Max, I can't remember off the top of my head, but it was quite thick....around 30 - 40mm from memory.

What's the make and model of the driver you're using for screws please? I'm making do with a standard drill but always have trouble stripping heads.

Are there different size vents? Ive measured ours, 40cm square.

I'm not sure about that, but when I was looking online for a replacement shower vent with the fan and light, there seemed to only be 1 size. The main roof vents in the kitchen and bedroom section of the van, are bigger, though. Are you measuring the overall dimension or the size of the cut out??

I measured external size, so yes your right. Its the 35x35 size. Next question, mine has the fan, where did you order yours from? Thanks

I bought mine from TRA Australia but you'll also find them on eBay, too. Just make sure you get the one that suits your existing cut out and overall dimensions.
