Good video, well presented and explained, I have two double glazed windows at the front of my house, each containing three units, they have all leaked and I can barely see out of them anymore, they are all externally beaded, I am wondering if I should replace the glass in them or just buy new frames that are internally beaded.

Hi there great video. I have old windows done in early 90’s, I have rubber seals on both sides would it be the same process for doing this?

If you want to remove the glass the gasket must come out first and go back in last, hope that helps

Great video. I'm after some of the rubber type 'beads' that you have inserted onto the inside of the window, but they are required for the exterior of the roof-light window I have. They appear to be 45 degrees to allow water run off. Can you tell me what they are called and where to source them if possible. Cheers, Don.

Fantastic video, thanks David. I have a blown unit however it is internally beaded. Can you advise me if I can replace blown unit using same method as shown in your video only in reverse( removing external wedges first then internal beads, replace unit , replace internal beads then finishing by installing new rubber wedges.) or is replacing this type of unit totally different? Any advice would be much appreciated.
@dmgladden
@dmgladden Жыл бұрын
Hi Surebet, I showed the external glazed type as its the early and much more difficult type you are lucky yours is a much newer type and much easier. You remove the needs from the inside normally top and bottom first that's the ones with the miter on but it's a leading curve on getting them out and back in a rubber hammer for fitting and a thin ridged tool to remove. The point to note is pressure needed to push them against the glass to in hook them from the track they sit in. Hope that helps but I'm sure you could find a video to show this

Hi David, this video was really well done. I have been looking for this information for a while, as I too have the older style windows you've demonstrated here. Just a quick question... how do you measure the glass? Clearly you had the replacement unit ready to fit, how did you size correctly? Thank you.
@dmgladden

Hi sorry for the late reply I never saw your comment, I had to take a unit put to get the correct size and then refit it but I guess the trade guys would know how much to add from what you can see but I don't

I'm just wondering, if, while you at at it, you could decide to upgrade to a triple-glazed unit? Would they even be available in the same size??
@dmgladden

I don't need triple glazing but if you can get at the same thickness then yes I guess you could
@berniesinclair1351

I know that you have changed the glazed unit yourself, but if that was the first time you took that peice of glass out how did you know what thickness of glass to order as this is a job I am going to do but don't really want to take the glass out twice just to measure the size.
@dmgladden
@dmgladden 3 жыл бұрын
Hi no it wasn't the first time i took them out as i needed to get all the sizes of all the units so i could order new ones but its good practice
@jamesdyas542

You can buy a glass measuring gauge off eBay about £18. Worked quite well and saves taking the glass out twice as long as you’ve got an opener to get it through. Won’t work if it’s just one fixed pane.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for a new panel? My mum has a conservatory that's been there for over twenty years. Some of the windows blew about five or so years ago. I'm going to get someone out to get a quote but I expect it to be around 2K if not more. Then I'd be able to ask questions about the window and would probably try to do it myself. I looked up some sites online that sell glazing panels and you have to put in the sizing, the window was 36" x 10" for instance a small thin one that opens above a larger window, it quoted £40 for it. I don't know anything about pricing but I find this quite cheap, I was expecting hundreds each.
@dmgladden
@dmgladden 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kyle mine cost for the small ones around £30 each and the large ones around £70 each and a got a bag of spacers for £5 and the rubber seal cast about £3 per meter hope that helps

No glazing tape? I thought you should use tape to make it harder for someone to remove if trying to break in.
@dmgladden
@dmgladden Жыл бұрын
No that a different system when double sided glazing tape is used in the frame and the glass unit then sticks to it making it impossible to remove from outside as you need to cut the tape on the inside but this type the plastice trims clip on from outside but act just mainly for appearance it help a little with the waterfalls but nothing for the security of the glass

Also....make sure you inform the glass supplier the location of the glass.....as....like in this instance.... due to its height above floor level and being located next to a door...the glazing unit would need to be made using toughened glass. There are other things too....Is the glazing " Pilkington K Glass" (thermal/sunlight qualities). Is the glass tinted or frosted/patterned....the colour of the spacing bar between the two panes of glass.. etc... etc... Oddly enough ...changing the actual glazing unit is the easy bit...ha.

@@dmgladden Point taken....I appreciate that you're showing the basic steps to changing a glazing unit for those that are unsure how to go about this task, and to save those folks some cash, in not having to call out a glazier, or the like. I was just mentioning a few other points for people to take into consideration prior to them even starting the job, even though the task itself is relatively simple, as you show. An informative video, as your videos usually are. Keep up the educational work.... The information, which you provided (and I added to), is the key, so that folks, unlike yourself, who are unsure if this is a job they can tackle, can decide for themselves if, or not, they would prefer to call in someone like youself to do this job for them. Anyhow....Thanks for the time and effort you put into the videos informining folks how to carry out simple tasks, like this example, for themselves...this can only be a good thing....of that, I am sure.

Always push unit onto beads then rubber bottom first then your glass won’t catch spacers
