How to Replace a Rear Axle Seal and Replace Drum Brakes in a 1966 Mustang

After replacing the radiator on my 1966 Mustang, the next item to tackle was the leaky rear axle seal. While I was in there, I replaced the drum shoes too.

The drum brakes on any car can be intimidating, but all that hardware in there is not as confusing as it looks. Take pics and take your time and you'll get through it! :)

Where did you order the seals from? Do you have a part number? I would like to pickup at a local automotive store not cj pony parts.

That axle seal is made by Centric, and the part number is 417.65014 The OD of the seal is 2.085" and the ID is 1.365"

Have you considered adding rear quarter windows to simulate a GT 350?

Yes, I have a set that came with the fastback, but I think I’m going to stick with the vents. 🙂

Does the backing plate have to be removed in order to install the new seal?

Nope, even the drum brake assembly can be left in place to replace this seal. :)

I'm having a hard time finding the gasket (if that's what they are called) that goes on both sides of the baking plate between the axle housing and the plate that holds the axle in. What is that called? Where did you get yours from?

I believe the gasket you are looking for is the Fel-Pro 55001 gasket.

Thanks! Try looking up oemtools 27129. It's not a high quality tool, but it's good enough for this kind of job. :)

@@AndyKruseChannel My fault. I should have explained better. I'm rebuilding my rear brakes. All new springs, brackets, shoes etc but my axles will be in. I wonder how much of a fight I will have to get those items in with the axle flange being in the way.

@@joebob344 It shouldn't be an issue to service your brakes with the axle installed. It is not common for people to remove the rear axle when working on the drum brake components. All parts to the drum brakes are designed to be removed and replaced easily and quickly. It's just the installation order that can get confusing. :)
