Watching this, with both laying side by side- brought back a funny-but-not-so-funny memory: guy was "changing" turbo (not upgrade) and after a few beers and shots with his "Garage Buddies" ended up stupidly re installing the *same* seized unit again.

Wow, that was one of the best how-to videos I've seen in a long time! I'm very impressed by the high quality video shots, and the rigorous documentation of all torque values and tools used. I really liked the reassembly montage as well. Amazing (scary) keeping track off all the parts, hoses, connectors it takes to access the turbo.

Wow, good on you for replacing your own turbo! On the only turbocharged car I had (Shelby GLHS) it was easier to remove the head and exhaust manifold/turbo assembly together as a unit, and it was a PITA, as you can imagine. I can't get over how clean the engine bay is in your car too. I wish I could keep mine that clean. Great vid!

Awesome video! I'm in the process of doing exhaust manifold because I have a leak, not sure if it's the manifold gasket or the manifold itself but those 4 bolts from the manifold to the turbo were loose, i tightened them and it's not as bad as before but still there and I can still notice it. They were easy to get off and here you are saying they're super tight. Then when I went to torque them down 45-50 ft-lb, I was scared I was going to snap them so I'm not sure if its that that's loose and thats why I have a leak or if it actually is the manifold/gasket. Any advice/input on this would be great! I love watch your guy's videos, always super informative and easy to follow!

Excellent video, using this video I was trying to replace the turbo in a Mazda CX7, I bougth a new turbo in Ebay, i did all the upper disassembly but when I lift the car and I try to start the lower dismantling my surprise was that the access to the turbo was impossible, I guess the 4x4 transmission is bigger that the Mazdaspeed3, so in a CX7 it's necessary to take out the engine to replace the turbo :(

+greddy1010 well, k04 turbo problems on Speed3`s are not uncommon. However, there are a lot of them, pulling strong, without any problems. Sadly, mine died on my last year, even though the car was stock. Changed mine to an BNR S1, hope this one last a lifetime ;) Good luck with your Mazdaspeed. Cheers.

@numinous4789 8 жыл бұрын
Love my BNR S3. 385/380 @ the wheels when on the E28 tune, in good weather. And it's still very responsive. Actually, the lack of K04 "insta-spool" helps get the power down even better as well. S3 is just about perfect for stock block, IMHO. S4 or bigger if you're going to build, for sure.
@everythingdiy
@everythingdiy 8 жыл бұрын
+Numinous Impressive numbers, looking forward to an S3. And yes the instant spool of the K04 can make driving a bit scary sometimes. One second your just having a good time then suddenly your torque steering towards a wall.

OMG thank you so much for this video. About how long did this take? I'll be using this video for a guide to replace my turbo here in the next few weeks, hopefully I'll have some help. Pretty sure my turbo is going out. Its been smoking under hard pulls for a while now. And I just noticed a weird noise under hard acceleration that sounds something like turbo whistle and really weird rattling sound. I'm going to do some inspecting before I jump right into replacing the turbo to make sure its the turbo and not something else like the timing chain or AC compressor, but I'm almost positive its the turbo.

+everythingdiy (very nice job with your videos) ...a flare nut wrench can work also .. all these specialty sockets & wrenches can only apply limited torque, since they are split or relieved to allow the O2 wire to pass through ... PB Wrench may help, but my experience is, get the torch out, heat it up real good, then you stand a chance of getting it loose by dead blow hammering on one of these special wrenches. If you reuse the O2 sensor, expect to have to replace the metal gasket (they corrode from heat / humidity and can disintegrate when loosening the sensor).

Did you remove the plastic shroud thing over the intercooler to improve air flow? Any noticeable increase to power or efficiency from doing that? Thought about doing that to my MS3.
@everythingdiy
@everythingdiy 7 жыл бұрын
Don't, that plastic shroud is important for proper airflow and cooling of the intercooler. If you remove it, you will for sure see higher boost air temperatures and reduce the effectiveness of the cars cooling system. The shroud has two important features first it creates a funnel for air to flow through the cooling channels of the intercooler and second it regulates air pressure over the intercooler and around the engine bay. In order for air to flow through something there needs to be an area of high pressure on one side and low pressure on the other. If both sides are equal or close in pressure you will see little to no airflow. This is what happens when you remove that shroud, you allow more air to flow around the intercooler which will end up pressurizing the engine bay and stopping air flow for not only the intercooler but the radiator as well. It's been tested may times on this car and the results of removing the shroud always equated to worse cooling performance. We actually do have a shroud; but it’s different because we run an aftermarket intercooler.

everythingdiy oh, ok. I was curious about that being a possibility too. Thanks for the response!! Great Vids by the way! I'm a commercial electrician and work with my hands daily but working on cars has always worried me, excluding the "simple stuff", i.e, oil change, filters and such. But now I'm pretty confident I can do a lot more. So thanks for the Great videos! Subscribed!! I've only just started watching but do you work exclusively on the MS3? I have a 2012 "base" model. No Nav,HID or any extras. All Stock too, but I've recently put Hawk Pads and Centric Cyro-reated rotors. Nothing special, really.
