I just completed making my first screen complete from scratch. It is a lot longer than yours and after I finished making and installing it, I noticed it had bowed. The screen was on too tight. I have plenty of spare screen so will redo it using your book and 4 small bits of spline tips. Fantastic. Thank you.

I've been replacing screen for awhile and always ended up with at a little wrinkle somewhere in a corner no matter what I did. It was always good enough for me but after seeing this I plan on re-doing a few of my screens using your method. Very well explained and thank you for sharing. For those who gave a thumbs down please do a video of you re-screening so we can all see how you so called know it all window screeners do it.

It's hard to get the correct tension on the screens. Some of the screen frames are flimsy and flex if you make the screening too tight, the screen frame won't lay flat. If the fram is slightly "warped" after you are done (it's hard to avoid a little warp) it will still work. It's almost impossible to get them lie perfectly flat.

Hi Diane, I tried your method and it definitely made a tricky install much easier. Great tips and tricks. Couple of critiques: the lighting was a little dark, made it very hard to see in a couple of places, so an additional light will help. Also, after the two sides were done and you removed the little pieces of holder spline, you then put them up in the corner to help with the last two sides, it would have been great to see the install completely of those last two sides. Lastly the convex side of the roller is to pre groove the screen in the channel before installing the spline. You don't have to do it, but sometimes it helps especially with metal screen. All in all a helpful video to a frustrating process! oh, and as some have commented putting a book on top of the screen makes it a little easier, puts the perfect amount of slack and holds the screen in place. Thank you ! :)

Hi Alan, thanks for the tips. This is an early video, I've made improvements with the lighting & camera work. I have changed my method a bit. I now install the spline on one side from corner to corner and cut it. Next I install a piece on the opposite side, again corner to corner. Then install it on the remaining two sides. There is no need to go around the corner, just close to it. Using four separate pieces of spline material is easier to work with. I have another channel that has many home repair videos, including a few on vinyl window repair. Loved the book idea! I've had egg-timer shaped frames in the past from getting the stuff too tight. Also, I bought heavier screening to keep cats from damaging them. This meant the old spline material was too thick and it was a horrible battle getting the spline set. Then I discovered spline material comes in several sizes. Getting a smaller size spline material from the hardware store fixed the problem.

Also if you pull on the spline as you are inserting it into the track with your spline roller as you go along, it will help to shrink the spline and make it thinner to help with fitting it tightly into the track guide. Depending on which hand you hold your spine roller with, you want that hand behind your empty hand to insert the spline as you pull it to make it thinner. Good luck

You are welcome. I have an improvement for the video. I have found that it's a little easier and you can get the screen tension to your liking by installing the gasket on one side. You can cut it close to the corner... no need to go around the corner. Then on the side opposite of the gasket you just installed, install the gasket, again just from corner to corner, no need to go around. Then do the other two sides.

Great explanation. I liked the trick of the book and the short pieces of spline to hold the screen in place pre-installation of the longer pieces. Mobile screen repair offered to replace screens on 2 44"x 88" patio screen sliders for a total of $320. Guess I'll do it myself!

After replacing many of the screens in my house the second time, the fiberglass screening doesn't last long. I have changed my method a little. I now insert a strip of gasket on one side of the screen, then insert a strip on the opposite side. Then do the other two sides. You can just run the gasket up to the corner... no need to go around it.

You are welcome, Monique. It's my pleasure to help. One improvement to the way shown in the video is to roll the gasket into one side of the frame, then cut the gasket it close to the corner. Then go to the opposite side of the frame from the side you just installed the gasket. Install a strip on that end and again cut close to the corner. Then put the gasket into the other two sides. You don't need the gasket in the corners and if you install strips on opposing sides, there even less chance of it bunching up. You can also check the tightness of the screen as you install the strips and make any needed adjustments to the books in the center of the frame.

Thank you for this video! I saw several instructional videos about changing the window screen, and this was the best one. I found that 2 DVD cases stacked up were the perfect height for placing under the screen frame. Also, I would say do not use scissors to cut the excess mesh when you are done. I did that and ended up pulling the mesh out of the groove so I had to redo everything.

You are welcome. One improvement I have to the video is to insert the gasket on one side, then cut it close to the corner. Go the the opposite side of the screen from the one you installed the gasket and install the gasket on that side. Do the other two sides. You don't need it go around the corners. Going from side to side gives you a little more control over the screen tension.

Thank you so much for the video. Easy to understand. I replaced a window and door screen. On the door screen I used the original spline because it was not dry rotted. I ended up taking it out and using the one in my kit. The spline in the kit was much easier to use. It was not as stiff. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix an warped Anderson window screen? Thank you.
@Diane_R
@Diane_R 2 жыл бұрын
I have found that the screen frames that have the plastic corner connectors are hard to get the correct tension on the screen. If the screen it too tight it won't lay flat. I bought two new screens from American Craftsman because the latches were broken on the original screens. From the factory, the screen would not lay flat. That's why I used books to try to get the screen tension correct.

Little bit of constructive critique. Most videos I've seen, the book was placed on top of the screen, not under it. It seems to me that, with book under it, the screen is still free to stretch over the book and put pressure on the frame.

YES! You don't have to bury the piling all the way into the groove.
@Diane_R
@Diane_R 3 жыл бұрын
I agree you can control the screen tension by the piling depth in the groove. I also have refined my technique. I now put the gasket in one side and cut it (you don't have to round the corner, just get close to it.) Next put a piece of gasket in the side opposite of the first piece that you install. Again you can skip the corners. Then install the other two pieces on the remaining sides. If I find some spare time I will try to put up a revised video.
