For those watching. A quick little tip, the nail gun will not nail into concrete, which is what was happening when his nailer had issues, it was jamming the nail gun. any type of construction adhesive would work perfectly fine for that. Nail into the wood, glue to the concrete.

Thank you for this video! I'm a landlord and we try to do as much of the repairs ourselves as we can. Replacing threshold isn't one I've had to address often, thankfully. This video was helpful! Might I suggest?: I would have liked to see how and what you cut the aluminum piece with. Also, would have been helpful to see how you determined how much you needed to build up under the threshold (some might have chosen to wrap the exposed wood with aluminum?), just a mention that when an original threshold is removed it sometimes requires a bit more surgery to release from it's seat, how you determined the height and cutting the door, and solving the issue with the gap... which I usually resolve with a sweep installed with screws on the inside and outside of the door, but not every knows that. Oh, and I adore Izzy! Thanks again for the helpful video!

Kristen, I still don't think he answered your question adequately. Before removing the old threshold, I would have inserted thin pieces of wood between the bottom of the door and the threshold to determine how much build up is needed.
@dougb8207 Жыл бұрын
This set of question/answers was helpful to me. I also wondered about the cutting tool; hope I can get a straight cut with a jigsaw. Another video used a handheld bandsaw, but I don't have one. My garage door threshold isn't graded well, so water runs toward the door instead of away from it. I had some pros in who also helped with weatherstripping, and they just used sweeps also. I thought that was a bit cheap and maybe inadequate, but they're a huge improvement and probably good enough.

Excellent tutorial, thank you! I have a 1"+ gap under my workshop door w/ concrete floor. I've screwed on a thick rubber sweep but last winter a rodent sized hole got chewed through it. I want to install this but since I often roll heavy items through that doorway on steel castors. The whole floor is approx level but it raises up just a little at the door, so maybe inverting your idea, and attaching it to the bottom of the door could work. Just shim enough so when the door is closed, the rubber strip would come into contact with the concrete. I'm not 100% sure the fine details yet, but your video inspired me to come up with a way to seal it good once and for all. Cheers!

Nice explanation, helpful video, Wayne. Thank you for sharing your experience. It seems like it would be useful to trim the rubber part of the threshold to length before you attach the metal part to the door jamb, should you ever edit this video. An on-screen caption would get that point across well, I think. I did wonder how you were determining how thick to make your build-up. You answered here in the comments: you just bought the same threshold you had before, and (I guess) matched the build-up to your door jamb. Thanks again.

Dwayne, I had a handyman about 2 years ago replace my backdoor threshold and other components. The old threshold was very tall, but the new one he installed left a decent size gap between the door and threshold. I was so mad! Anyhow, the solution I employed was a 1-3/4 in. x 36 in. Mill/Vinyl Weatherstrip Door Bottom. Essentially, just a huge metal piece the slides over the door and fills the gap. It has a rubber seal on the bottom to ensure it meets the threshold. The issue I've had as of late is that there's a small gap between the seal and threshold plate. Last I saw, the seal was starting to string apart like a twizzler as it separates from the pack. I was able to obtain a new seal to slide onto the track, but haven't put it on as of yet due to it being so cold. Any suggestions as to why the seal would start breaking away or any suggestions? This would be super helpful!
@DIYwithWayne2 жыл бұрын
I think I know of the part you installed on the bottom of your door. Those are not of the quality and durability of a normal threshold. Your better solution would be to get the threshold reinstalled properly. The part you described is a good solution but will wear out sooner than the threshold. Hello Wayne, Thank you for the video. We live in the much colder north (Wisconsin). We just had our door replaced and a new threshold installed but immediately encountered a problem. It is now December 1 and there is no thermal barrier between the outside and inside of the threshold. Hence, we get condensation not the inside which runs onto the wooden floor. That will wreck the floor after a while. What suggestions do you have for this situation? The vast majority of thresholds sold seem to be all metal. We can't be the only ones to have the condensation problem?
@DIYwithWayne2 жыл бұрын
We don't have as cold of weather as you do but there are wood thresholds on the market. You could try one of those. If the condensation is getting on your wood floor, I would expect it to cause discoloration and or rot. Do you have a storm door? If not adding one may help. Good luck with your project and have a great day.

Maybe should have painted the wood completely to waterproof it...?

There was 1 small strip of wood we removed but mostly we just cleaned up and vacuumed the area. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

How about a new sweep
@DIYwithWayne2 жыл бұрын
I added shims under the threshold plate to close the gap. There is a storm door also. So, in my case the sweep was not necessary, but might help someone else. Thank you for your suggestion and for visiting our channel. We hope you have a great day.

Hello Wayne,..why didn't you buy a wider sill and have it sit on top of your hardwood to avoid the small gap?

I was just replacing it with the same type. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

At the edge is metal flashing, it is needed if u don’t have it!
@DIYwithWayne3 жыл бұрын
Hello C Jones, Thank you for visiting. I know the metal flashing is code but this old threshold is 40 years old. If you look at the wood under it I took out, it is not getting wet. This door is on a covered porch and also has a storm door. So I reinstalled it the way it was installed originally. However it would be wise to install a metal flashing. Thanks for your comment and have a great day.

placing a thin piece of anything under the rubber strip will eliminate that gap, a piece no longer than 8 or 9 inches should solve your problem

Can you just replace the seal on these things? I live in an apartment and the gardeners leaf blower pushes dirt under my door.... I would like to just repair the seals.
@DIYwithWayne2 жыл бұрын
You can but the problem may be getting the correct part. However I would think the Apartment Maintenance People should repair that. I wish you good luck and hope you find a solution.

@@DIYwithWayne The maintenance people at my apartment are dim witted unfortunately.... I don't trust them with a flat head screw driver. TY for the quick response!

No caulk?
@DIYwithWayne3 жыл бұрын
No, not in this installation. It is not needed. The door is on a covered porch and does not get rained on and the bottom seal stops air flow. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

The edge of the flooring shows. How do you cover up that gap? Maybe with a different type of sill plate?
@DIYwithWayne9 ай бұрын
We just replaced the threshold the same as it was before. There is a very small gap but it is how the floor installers did it (and they did a crappy job) . Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

That 11/32 ply is going to rot quicker than you can celebrate this repair.
@DIYwithWayne3 жыл бұрын
It is on a covered porch and so it does not get wet. If you noticed the old wood I removed it was over 30 years old and not weathered. If this door was in the weather it would be a problem and I would have done something different. Thank you for your observation and have a great day.

The aluminum insert is meant to be adjustable up with supplied hardware.
@DIYwithWayne4 жыл бұрын
The threshold we purchased did not have any supplied hardware. Only the aluminum threshold, the rubber seal and 3 screws. Thank you for visiting and please subscribe to our channel if you have not already.

What about caulking under that threshold to seal out air and moisture? No sealants?? Shouldn't the threshold be "dipping downward towards the outside, so any water drips OUTSIDE not inside the door? Looks backwards to me. None of these guys use a level??
@DIYwithWayne3 жыл бұрын
I replaced the old threshold with a new one just like the old one. It just needed to be raised a little and it does slope to the outside. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

to fix the uneven gap at the bottom you need to adjust your hinges, your door is sagging. Lots of videos on fixing sagging doors

That's not going to last. That wood will rot even with the paint. It'll just take another year to get there.
@DIYwithWayne4 жыл бұрын
That wood is under a covered porch and does not get wet. The wood we took out had been there for 40 years and was not treated or painted so it will be OK. Thanks for your comment. Have a great day.
