Thanks for this video. I've been wanting to replace the battery in my GO500 for some time now and this is very helpful. I guess there are a variety of incarnations of the GO500. Mine has an extra "cable" between the two sides that needs to be disconnected before they can be separated. The cable has two tiny wires - one red, one black - twisted together. The additional connector is just above and a little to the left of the screen cable connector (which is the black one at the right side of the circuit board) that you can see at about 5:50 into the video. At that same point in the video, you can see the silk screen for where the additional connector is positioned in my case. From the perspective at 5:50, the red wire is on the right side when plugged into the connector.

A very helpful video. Taking the cover off is tricky - it's designed not to be disassmebled which is disappointing. I eventually found that I could create a gap at the bottom long side and then run a plastic tool round to separate the whole front screen but it needed quite a bit of force. A few of the plastic clips broke but this did not seem to prevent the screen fitting back reasonably tightly. I found clipping the multipin motherboard connector at the end was awkward but it did seem to snap in place when located (the video does show this). I tested the device before I clipped the screen fully back on and this helped to confirm the connections were slotted in properly (first time the motherboard strap cable came loose and I had to take the screen off again - the trickky bit!).

Thank you for this, it was very helpful. Couple of observations. There are only five screws to be removed and all are the same length. It is not necessary to remove the two screws (the small ones) supporting the angled metal plate at the top. (This looks like the GPS antenna and is soldered to the main PCB.) Secondly, I'd advise taking a photo of the speaker/battery plugs before removal. That will help when re-connecting. There appear to be two different models of GO500; do you know how one can identify them before opening the case? On mine, the two screws either side of the stand socket (the Torx ones) do not hold anything in that I can see. Certainly they do not seem to come out but rotate a collar.

On my GO500 the Torx screws go into tabs that are attached to the gray bezel around the display (unfortunately, I can't post a photo of this). So if you don't remove them it would not be possible to separate the two sides. Also, I don't think the Torx screw size was mentioned in the video. A T5 screwdriver worked for me.

Hi how do you tell its the battery thats gone bad? my go 520 was working absolutely fine one night but the morning after, it wont turn on at all. i left it charging for 2 hours like tomtom troublehssoting suggested but still wont turn on, no sound no light. had it for one year and always had it plugged into the cigratte charger when in use.

Mine ran when plugged in but as soon as I unplugged it, it would turn off. That is how I knew it was the battery.
