Thanx for your videos. Bought a B&H 256 in working order for $25 today at flea mkt. Few videos on them, trial and erred the back case off, learned to leave the 4 lower screws alone. Need counsel on lubing gears and motor.

I use a clear silicone grease for the gears and small electric motor oil for the little brass pillow block bearings and the motor. These you can get at your local hardware store. You don't need but a few drops of oil and a light coat of grease. Don't forget to grease the Shutter wheel/ claw cam. I have video on this also. I'll see if I can find the link. Thank you!

Great video. Borrowed same projector from a friend and the motor would run but nothing would move. Looks like it's the belt. Once it comes in the mail, I'll be back to watch this again!

+hardluckcharlie question maybe you can answer. I did all the steps here and the belt was very loose. It's now replaced but the gears still do not spin. I've noticed .... Nevermind. I figured it out. I guess the gears haven't moved in so long the just needed a little "jump" once I moved them around a little bit the whole thing came back to life!

I have a 357 B - I took it apart as you suggested and the belt looked good but there was a lot of gunk in the gears etc. so I cleaned things up and and it seems to be working great - until I put on a reel of film. It feeds fine and catches and then it all stops turning. One time it continued great going fwd as long as the film was not on the receiving spool and was going to the floor. When I put it in reverse it struggled and just when I was about to give up, it started working and rewound properly onto the original spool. If feel like I'm soooo close. It's almost like the load of the film is too much for it to turn. I started with a 7" reel and then a 3" with the same results....All the feeding spools seem to be turning fine and the film doesn't seem to be caught up in the feeding system. I would very much appreciate your thoughts and suggestions...

99% of the time it's the belt that needs to be replaced. Even if they look good they can be a little stretched out. That is where I would start. www.ebay.com/itm/291686072152

@@hardluckcharlie thank you... I ordered a belt. I noticed on your video there is "grease" on the wheels... since I did such a good job "cleaning" mine up (and it was all dried so I think it needed cleaning) do I need to put grease back on? what type? where do I put it?

Great tutorial! Would you be able to do a tutorial on how to change the drive belt on a Bell & Howell Filmosonic 1731-1733 Super 8 sound projector? For the life of me I cannot figure out how to get the old belt off the pulleys.

My Bell & Howell 456A turns on and the light turns on, but the image projected is just a blob. Is there a way of focusing the image, or anything you can suggest to address this problem? thanks

The blob is usually always from a "foggy" lens. Shop eBay for a clear lens. $20-30.

hardluckcharlie Thanks for the reply! I removed the lenses and they seemed pretty clear, but a few of them were chipped at the edge (also not sure I replaced them in the right order). Could the chips be the problem?

Well chips can be a problem for sure. But if you get the lens sequence incorrect that is a much more significant problem. I would consider a "new" used lens. But if you have the time to experiment, try putting them in a different order. Good luck!

I have an old Bell now projector and I'm trying to clean it up right now but it's got some kind of blue oil in the bottom of what is that and is it detrimental to it

I have a B&H 456A and replaced the rubber tire, and drive belt. It works much better now... however the picture it gives is horrible. I think something is missing like a shoe but not sure what parts are supposed to be there. The picture is very washed out with white light around the picture. I ran the same 8mm film on an older 1950's Regent 8mm projector and the picture is 10 times better with nice vibrant color. Please help! What is wrong with my B&H 456A?

Sorry if this is posted elsewhere, but what could be a reason why my Bell & Howell 456A projector suddenly won't run in reverse? The single frame advance knob spins, but the front reel head won't move. Thanks in advance.

+stosh16 It's hard to tell without actually seeing it. But, it could be the drive belt has stretched. Or it could be the transmission mechanism attached to the drive tires needs adjusting. Check your belt first. We'll try to get a video up showing how to make simple adjustment to the drive tire mechanism. Thanks for writing.

why doesn.t the film feed all the way? It starts feeding but then it backs up.

The small rollers might need to be lubricated with WD-40. If they do not spin freely the film can get twisted and then snagged and backed up accordion style. Good luck!!!
