HOW TO: Replace Brake Master Cylinder Reservoir Grommets

Do your brake reservoir bottles dribble all over the place? Its super easy to fix!
In this video I replace the rubber grommets between the reservoir and the master cylinder on my '79 Alfa Romeo Alfetta. The process is the same or very similar for many different Italian cars, particularly Alfa, Fiat, Lancia, Ferrari, Maserati, and many more!

It is best to do a gravity bleed after this procedure to make sure there is no air bubble in the cylinder. Just leave the cap off the reservoir for an hour or so and any air will rise up and escape.

so Im looking to change the brake master cylinder on a 1990 dodge dakota. but it seems to only come with the brake master cylinder and not the resorvoir. So I can just remove the reservoir and put it on the new one correct. Thank you

Mine keeps popping up after a short period of time, very aggravating. Didn't even replace it, i just accidently knocked it off one day lol. Maybe I need to replace the grommets.

Thank you for the informative video. I would like to ask a question pls. My 2007 Toyota Rav4 brake pedal goes nearly to the floor when brakes are applied. No visible leaks, and no wishing sound if it the booster is defective. Would entire brake master cylinder have to be replaced. Also, where did you purchase the grommets between the reservoir and the main cylinder. Are the grmmets universal or car specific. Thank you

I don’t think the grommets are universal. I also have a Toyota and there’s a specific part number for them. Google will help you!

I got a master cylander with a plastic tank. This model covers a few different applications, made by delco but with Toyota applications. I noticed beside it having threaded ports for two chambers it had a molded male fitting for a plastic tube. Toyota does not have it nor does my defective one I am replacing. What can I plug this port with. I was thinking a silicon glue or a capped rubberr hose. Please advise.

I would use a rubber vacuum cap to plug the unused port. Dorman makes a pack of assorted sizes (part number 41050) that you can buy at your local auto parts store. I use those things all the time for a variety of uses. I've found them to be fairly gasoline resistant, not sure about brake fluid though.

Do you have to bleed anything if you’re just replacing the reservoir?

You shouldn’t need to, no. I would press the brake pedal a few times afterwards to make sure it doesn’t feel like there is air in the system though. Never hurts to double check.

I have a leak between the reservoir and master cylinder on my 67 VW bus. I replaced my grommets and the leak is still happening. I must have a tiny crack in the plastic reservoir itself. Very frustrating.
